Kindergarten Age Bill Heads To Lawmakers
HARTFORD (AP) â A proposal to raise the starting age for Connecticut kindergarten students has received a key General Assembly committeeâs approval.
The appropriations committee approved a bill Monday rolling back the fifth-birthday enrollment deadline from Jan. 1 to Oct. 1 starting in 2015. It would affect about 6,700 children each year with birthdays in October, November and December.
It now awaits House and Senate votes.
Some education advocates are concerned because the billâs new version removes a promise of preschool for children whose enrollment would be delayed by the change. Legislators say the $40 million cost was unworkable, but they are seeking other ways to offer more preschool access.
Parents can currently delay enrollment until their children turn 7.
