On Thursday, May 5, people will gather across the nation in over 60,000 local community events to pray for America as part of the nation’s 71st year observance of the National Day of Prayer.

A local Christian observance of the 2022 National Day of Prayer is scheduled for that evening at Fairfield Hills, near the large flagpole off Keating Farms Avenue. The formal 60-minute event will begin at 7 pm; a music prelude will start at 6:30 pm.

This is an open air event. Participants will need to bring their own lawn chairs.

In case of inclement weather the event will move to the Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

The National Day of Prayer offers an opportunity to pray with others in Newtown and in concert with millions across the nation for the country and community. All are welcome.

A key part of the evening is the active participation by all attending, who break into smaller groups to pray specifically for concerns of the nation and the community. There will be prayer for government, military, business, media, education, and families, and particularly those who serve in these areas.

The theme of this year’s event is “Exalt the Lord who has Established Us.”

The National Day of Prayer dates back to a proclamation of the Continental Congress in 1775 to set aside a day for fasting and prayer. Congress established an annual day of prayer by joint resolution in 1952 and in 1988 it was designated as the first Thursday in May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation.
