Mattatuck Unitarians Welcome Gays

WOODBURY — Recently, an announcement was made by the Rev Bonnie Vegiard that the Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society has been officially recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association as a “Welcoming Congregation.”

The term “Welcoming Congregation” describes a congregation that is intentionally affirming and supportive of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and/or transgender persons and their families who are seeking a spiritual home.

“While this vote does not and can not mean that we are free from all homophobia and heterosexism in our congregation, it does mean that we have committed to challenging ourselves and our community to recognize and try to overcome these ingrained attitudes. It means that we wish to value love in any form that includes respect and mutual consent, and that we wish to value persons for who they are,” said Rev Vegiard.

The Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society, a liberal religious organization, opens its services with the words “Come, come, whoever you are” each Sunday morning at 122 South Pomperaug Avenue, Woodbury. For directions or to inquire further about the Society, call Rev Vegiard at 203-266-4810.
