ON-GOING

Monday, May 21 – “Fathers’ Night” – 7:30 pm.

Mondays, May 14 and June 4 – “Parents of Children with Special Needs” – 9 am.

SPECIAL NOTE: Monday, May 7, 9 to 10:30 am, Dr Jack Fong, Chairman of Pediatrics, Danbury Hospital, will be the guest speaker at a special meeting for parents of children with special needs. Dr Fong will speak about services available in the greater Danbury area. Please call NYS to register.

UP-COMING

“VIOLENCE AND THE MEDIA – THE TIE THAT BINDS” – Presented by Dorothy Singer, PhD. This timely program will be held on Monday, May 7, from 7 to 9 pm at the Newtown High School Lecture Hall. Dr Singer is co-director, Family Television Research and Consultation Center, Yale University.

This free presentation is co-sponsored by Newtown Youth Services and the Newtown Prevention Council. Please call to register, 270-4335.

 

GAIL SMITH AWARD

To be presented at the Newtown Youth Services’ Annual Board Meeting on Monday, May 21, at 7 pm. A student and an adult volunteer are recognized as well as a local business. Their selection is based on outstanding contributions and leadership for the betterment of Newtown’s youth. This even is held at Newtown Youth Services and is open to the public.

 

OUTSTANDING YOUTH AWARDS

As part of the “Celebrate Youth Festival,” NYS will present awards to young people at the 14th Annual Outstanding Youth Awards ceremony at 4 pm on Thursday, May 24. Held at Newtown Youth Services, the public is always welcome.

 

14TH ANNUAL NYS TALENT SHOW

Friday, May 11, 7 pm, Newtown Middle School. Ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for children. The show will be video taped and those tapes will be available for purchase at $15. Proceeds go to the NYS Youth Advisory Board Scholarship Fund.

4-H: Wednesdays, 4 to 5:30 pm. Harvest your own flowers and vegetables in a garden plot you design yourself! Help us build a Butterfly Plant Nursery, a Children’s Theme Garden, and a Chicken and Rabbit Garden. Plant a row for the hungry in our garden and bring your pet to our pet show. We meet at NYS, so come and join us.

 

NYCAAP PARENT PROM – Why should the kids have all the fun? This event is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, at 7 pm in the Alexandria Room. Tickets are $40 per couple, $25 single, BYOB. Food. Dancing. Fun! Call 270-4335 for more info.

YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS

THE HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD (HS YAB) – Has completed their organized meetings for the year. New members are always welcome. Officers for the 2001-2002 school year are Karen Earle and Gregg Hammond, co-chairs; Jeanmarie Moriath, secretary; and Jen Kotch, treasurer. Feel free to contact any of these students for further information.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD (MS YAB) – Those participating in Independent Living Day will meet on Saturday, May 5. Further meetings will be announced.

NYCAAP will meet on Tuesday, May 8. Meeting time is 5:30 to 6:30 pm.
