The annual Jack Friel Memorial Scramble, sponsored by the Newtown Scholarship Association, will be held on Monday, June 18, at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe. Tee-off is slated for 11:30 am.

This year, the tournament will recognize and honor the service and accomplishments of the Honorable Bill Lavery Jr., chief judge of the appellate court of Connecticut. A long-time Newtown resident and board member of the NSA, Judge Lavery represents the essence of volunteerism in a society where time constraints have hampered many volunteer efforts.

Judge Lavery has been active for the AIDS Committee of Greater Danbury and the Mercy Learning Center of Bridgeport and has been a board member of the Pope John Paul II Center, the Cyrenius Booth Library, and the NSA.

Under the leadership of Judge Lavery, the NSA Golf Tournament has grown into a highly-anticipated, sold-out annual event. The NSA awards more than $150,000 annually in scholarships to high school graduates and continuing students and this year hopes to raise some $30,000 with the tournament.

For the tournament, an entry fee of $150 will include lunch, cocktailes, and a buffet dinner. Handicaps will be used and plenty of great prizes will be awarded in several categories. For those wishing to attend the dinner only, the cost is $50.

All golfers wishing to sign up can call Jim Morley at 426-8966.
