A Great Day For Newtown

To the Editor:

Last Saturday, April 25, was a great day for our town. The near 90-degree weather made it seem more like a summer festival than an early spring event, but this year’s second annual Newtown Earth Day Celebration proved to all who attended that our community cares...a lot! The local vendors, civic groups, schools, municipal organizations, churches and countless volunteers who help pull this off, made this day shine.

On behalf of the Newtown Clean Energy Task Force, I would like to thank all who participated and helped bring to life our event’s theme this year: Smiles, Education, and Awareness.

*The 2009 organizing committee: Pam Buchler, Kathy Quinn, Rob Kaiser, Terrence Ford, Bill Buchler, Dave Stout, Ben Roberts, Gordon Williams, Ed Miklaszewski.

*The Key corporate sponsors: Iroquois Gas Transmission, Ruth Parkins; Alteris Renewables, Bill Weber; The Taunton Press, Tom Luxedor; Community Energy, Mark Garrett.

*The aMaze-ing maze makers: Ben Roberts; Baxter, Michelle, Talia, and Aubrey Hankin; Julia, Christal, Nick, Scott, and Todd Preszler; The Reed Intermediate Environment Club; and Kim Macy for the bamboo donation.

*The local faith and ecumenical church community for starting the day with a peaceful and thoughtful morning service atop Castle Hill Road.

*The entire custodial staff at Newtown Middle School: Don and the crew. Your help was immense!

*The Blue Yodels for the great music — hope to see you next year.

*My Place Restaurant for the donated after-party food…and ice cream for the kids.

*To the educational speakers: Gary Ginsburg, Dr LaDonna, Nina Stout, and Dan Morrison.

*To the Lions Club of Newtown and the volunteers who helped Lose The Litter.

*To all of the vendors, not for profits, and civic groups who not only attended, but helped us spread the word to their members through email alerts. We saved a lot of money and paper!

*Finally, to the several hundred residents who came out and showed us all that when we work together as a community, there is a lot of good we can do.

We all look forward to next year and as always are open to suggestions and help in creating an even more successful event for our town. We can be reached at newtownearthdaylive.com.

Thank you,

Dan Holmes
