Girls’ Lacrosse Rebounds

The girls’ lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season, falling to FCIAC foe Wilton 16-10 at home on Saturday morning.

Lisa Vendel had three goals and Betsy Vendel (two goals and two assists) and Meghan Carney (two goals) led the Newtown offense. Jackie Isabella, Meghan Bridges and Emma Kingsley all had a goal each, and Kingsley added an assist. Kaitlin Brophy had two assists and Kristen Hudock assisted on another goal.

Goaltender Marnie Thompson stopped 18 shots, Kelly O’Connor and Stephanie Suhoza played well on defense and Brophy collected six ground balls.

The Nighthawks rebounded to topple New Milford 21-13 on the road on Monday. Brophy and Lisa Vendel both had five goals and Isabella and Bridges both scored three goals. Betsy Vendel and Meghan Carney had two goals apiece and Katie Canavan also scored. Brophy dominated on the draw circle and the defense of Annie Fletcher, Hudock, Stephanie Suhoza and O’Connor forced five turnovers and netted nine ground balls.

Girls’ Tennis Edged Twice

The Nighthawks lost 4-3 to Joel Barlow at home on April 24. The No. 1 singles match-up between Newtown’s Christina Ciamarra and Barlow’s Mel Reyes (which Ciamarra lost 6-7, 6-4, 4-6) was a competitive one, in part because the familiarity of the players with each other since they trained together at Trumbull Racquet Club for a few years.

“It makes it a lot more intense,” Ciamarra said of competing against an opponent she knows well versus other matches. “Nevertheless I always have fun. ... I’d play her any day.”

Newtown players to come out on top in this match were No. 4 singles player Nicole Vournazus, the doubles teams of Kristen Tanner and Meghan Loose, and Sara Benson and Ayesha Dholakia.

The Nighthawks also fell 4-3 to Lauralton Hall on April 23 to carry a 2-4 record into Wednesday’s match with Weston (after The Bee sports section went to press). Three of Newtown’s four setbacks have been 4-3 nail-biters.

Boys’ Tennis 2-0 In SWC

For the second time this spring, the boys’ tennis team defeated South-West Conference foe Joel Barlow (a team that had dominated the rivalry for a decade), winning 5-2 at Barlow on April 24. The first meeting was a nonconference match, but this one counted in the SWC standings. The results are as follows:

Singles:

1. Charlie Lillicraf, JB, d. Adam Wenick, 6-2, 6-3

2. Evan Batzer, Newtown, d. Chris Biederman, 6-4, 6-1

3. Timo Roehrs, Newtown, d. Harry Wheeler, 6-1, 6-3

4. Peter Manos, Newtown, d. Adam Jacobs, 6-3, 6-1

Doubles:

1. Casey Tenney/Joe Cappiello, Newtown d. Drew Crannell/Josef Tomengan, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2)

2. Blake Kramer/John Montgomery, JB, d. Colin Jacob/Max Paynter, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2)

3. Connor Howell/Rob Beier, Newtown, d. Alex Coleman/Sean Hanczor, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3

Newtown improved to 3-1 (2-0 in the SWC) and Joel Barlow fell to 2-4 (2-3 SWC).

Tenney pointed out that it took a little time for he and Tenney to become acclimated with their opponents since they faced a tandem of Kramer and Montgomery in the first clash between the schools on April 8.

“We started to get back to our game in the second and third set,” Tenney said. “It felt good.”
