Computer Group To Meet May 6

DANBURY –– The Danbury Area Computer Society (DACS) May 6 general meeting will be on the topic of how the Internet works.

Jim Scheef, DACS president, will be the featured speaker and will demystify many acronyms such as IP, TCP, DNS, HTTP, and FTP, all in simplified and nontechnical English. He plans to take the Internet from concept to current reality in large but easy to digest bytes. He also will explain concepts such as packet switching and protocol layers.

The idea for a presentation came to the DACS president when several people asked about having an Internet connection on a home network and “how to keep the bad guys out.” Instead of giving a demonstration of how to set up a router and why a user cannot plug a cable modem into a hub and get the same benefits as a router, he will explain how the Internet works the way it is. He intends to end his presentation with some guidance on home network security.

The meeting will be held in the Danbury Hospital Auditorium starting at 7 pm with computer-related questions and answers followed by club announcements and with the main presentation at 8 pm. The general meetings are free and open to the public. Bring a friend. For more information view DACS website at www.dacs.org.
