Blood Drive At

Newtown Congregational Church, May 7

By Nancy K. Crevier

Newtown Lions Club will sponsor an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, May 7, from 8:30 am to 6:15 pm, at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

Most donors think that donated blood is used only to replace blood lost by patients suffering from massive bleeding. But donated blood is also separated into other life-saving components.

Plasma is a source of proteins that stop bleeding by forming blood clots. Patients such as hemophiliacs, whose own blood does not clot properly, need these proteins.

Leukemia and other cancer patients are in need of platelets, which aid in blood clotting.

White blood cells are given to help patients, including newborn infants, fight severe infections.

The red blood cell components aid in the treatment of anemia and improve the oxygen-carrying ability of blood during surgery.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in good health. A government issued picture ID, a driver’s license, or a Red Cross donor card must be presented at registration; or two other forms of identification consisting of either a school/work/ military identification; a professional license or certification; a union card; a sheriff’s card; a majority card; a voter registration card; a passport/green card/ birth certificate; or a bank charge card with photo.

Sandwiches and brownies will be supplied by Women Involved In Newtown (WIN) and Dunkin’ Donuts will supply coffee and doughnuts.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are available by calling 800-GIVELIFE (800-448-3543). Appointments can also be made at BloodCT.org.

At the January 15 blood drive, also sponsored by the Newtown Lions Club, member Charley Godfrey said that a Newtown record of 135 pints were donated.
