With the cold and rain behind us the weather turning a little bit more stable, the schedule got considerably busier for Newtown High School.
There were two dozen games, matches and meets either here in Newtown or at points speckled around southwest Connecticut and considering a combined 18-6 record after all that activity, it was a pretty successful week for the Nighthawks.

BOYS TRACK
Newtown 100, Bethel 50
Weston 83, Newtown 67
The Newtown High School boysâ track and field team continued to exhibit its dominance on the track, but once again the field events proved to be its Achilles heel.
The Nighthawks cruised past Bethel, 100-50, but dropped an 83-67 decision to Weston despite holding a 21-point advantage over the Trojans after the track events. A first-place finish by Kevin Regan in the shot put, a second-place finish by Matt Boland in the long jump, and third-place finishes by Cody Cullens (triple jump) and Mike Maher (high jump) just wasnât enough.
The âHawks had a strong day in the distance events as Zach Schwartz and Kevin Hoyt finished one-two at 3,200 meters and Charlie Baldour finished first in the 800 meters. Meanwhile, the 4x800 relay put together an easy 38-second win over the Trojans while the 4x400 relay finished second to Weston by less than three seconds.
Jamie Goodwick had another spectacular day in the sprints with first- and second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively, both of which were photo finishes. At the same time, Cullens had a nice 18.9 finish in the 100 hurdles, but was two-tenths off the winning pace.
The âHawks will be at Bunnell High School next Monday to take on New Milford, Joel Barlow and Stratford.

Weston 88, Newtown 62
Head coach Doug Russell was confident the Newtown High School girlsâ track and field team would be competitive against a strong Weston team on Tuesday afternoon ⦠but the Lady Trojans were simply too strong.
The Lady Nighthawks defeated Bethel (88-60) and Lauralton Hall (132-12), but fell to the undefeated Trojans (88-62). Still, their recorded improved to 7-1.
Lauren Sudby (long jump), Annika Garrett (high jump), Jen Brill (3,200 meters) and Gabby Nastri (triple jump) were Newtownâs only individual winners.
Last weekend, the girls finished 12th at the annual OâGrady Relays â largely on the performance of the performance of the first-place 2,000-meter steeplechase team of Elise DeRoo, Brill and Sara Pollock. The locals finished ahead of Immaculate and Weston. Meanwhile, the 4x200 relay and pole vault groups both finished second.
The girls will be in New Milford next week to take on New Milford, Stratford and Joel Barlow.

BOYS LACROSSE
Norwalk 15, Newtown 12
The wins might not be piling up, but the offense continues to showcase its young talent.
Christian Beitel and Will Mahony scored three goals apiece as the Newtown High School boysâ lacrosse team dropped a 15-12 decision to Norwalk last weekend and fell to 2-6 overall, 2-2 in the South-West Conference.
Seven different players scored for the âHawks. Brendan Martin added a pair of goals while Jacob Dauz, Kyle OâConnor, Brian Reszoly and Travis Speer notched a goal apiece. Speer added four assists while Conor Martin, Zach DâAgostino and Beitel all recorded assists.
Dauz scooped six groundballs and Max Beitel made nine saves in the cage.
The âHawks hosted New Milford on Thursday and will be at Conard of West Hartford on Saturday. Next Tuesday, the locals will be in New Fairfield before returning home on Thursday to face Pomperaug at 7 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium.

The blades are sharp and slicing right through the South-West Conference.
The Newtown High School golf team put together two more impressive wins this past week to improve to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the SWC. The Nighthawks defeated Immaculate last week at Richter Park in Danbury, 162-177, and followed up by defeating Bethel on Tuesday at the Newtown Country Club, 148-167.
Stephen Oberstadt was the medallist at Richter Park with a 3-over par 39 while Pat Daly was the medallist at NCC with a blistering even-par 33.
Despite the wet conditions and the lingering rain last week, the âHawks were pretty sharp on the Richter Park layout as Billy McCann and Daly both carded rounds of 4-over 40. JP McDade slipped into the fourth slot with a 43. Nick Daven and Dan Curtis paced Immaculate with rounds of 42 and 43, respectively.
On Tuesday, the âHawks remained sharp on their home track as Oberstadt fired a 3-over 36 and Billy McCann fired a 5-over 38. Chris McCann and McDade added equal rounds of 41. Tucker Smith led Bethel with a 4-over 37.
The golfers hosted Brookfield on Thursday and next week will square off with Weston, Joel Barlow and Bunnell â all on the road â before hosting Pomperaug on Thursday.

Newtown 14, Lauralton Hall 2
Ever since that stunning last-second loss to Greenwich a few weeks ago, the Newtown High School girlsâ lacrosse team has been simply wreaking havoc.
With another 51 goals, the Lady Nighthawks â now with 128 goals on the season (or 14.2 per game) recorded three more wins and improved to 8-1 overall, 6-0 in the South-West Conference. Bethel, Avon and Lauralton Hall were the victims this past week.
In a 16-2 win over Bethel, 10 different players got into the scorebook with at least one assist. But Courtney Gleason (3 goals, 2 assists), Betsy Vendel (4 goals), Erica Vacaro (3 goals), Jen Greenwood (2 goals) and Rachel Maley (2 assists) were in their multiple times.
Vacaro controlled the draw as Moira Collier scooped seven groundballs. Meanwhile, up-and-comers Jackie Isabella (goal), Katie Rose (goal, assist), Annie Fletcher (assist) and goalie Marnie Thompson all had an opportunity to contribute.
In a 21-9 win over Avon â an old state tournament nemesis of the âHawks â Gleason scored five goals while Maley had two goals and four assists. Jen Greenwood and Moira Collier scored four goals apiece as Betsy Vendel chipped in three goals and two assists. Lisa Vendel added a pair of goals.
Lisa Isabella made five saves for the win. Collier also scooped seven groundballs and caused a number of turnovers as Stephanie Soder and Jen OâConnell helped anchor the defense.
In a 14-2 win over Lauralton Hall on Tuesday, Maley scored five goals and assisted on two others as Gleason and Greenwood notched two goals apiece. Collier and Stephanie Paproski each had a goal and an assist.
Renee Solheim and Jen OâConnell sparked the D and helped limit the Crusaders to just five shots on the cage. Isabella made three saves.
The âHawks battled New Milford on Thursday and will host Masuk on Saturday at 3 pm before hosting New Fairfield next Tuesday at 7 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium. The locals will then visit Pomperaug next Thursday for a 5 pm contest.

SOFTBALL
Newtown 16, Notre Dame 0
Newtown 7, Bethel 1
The bats are showing no signs of cooling off.
With 23 runs on 17 hits â six of those for extra bases â the Newtown High School softball team not only pounded Notre Dame of Fairfield and Bethel but completely overshadowed the fact that in those games Stacy Broughton and Jenna Legros both fired one-hitters.
The win over Notre Dame last Thursday was merely an afterthought. The Lady Nighthawks scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning without once lifting the bat off their shoulders and simply coasted home from there. Joanna Barry belted a home run that just about rolled all the way to the lacrosse fields while Katie Bowen tripled.
The win over Bethel on Monday was much more impressive. The locals broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in the top of the seventh and with the 7-1 win improved to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in the South-West Conference.
Kelly Tenney and Sam Ciaccia each went 2-for-3, with Kenney doubling and Ciaccia doubling and tripling. Legros (with a double) and Caitlin Cosgrove each went 2-for-4 while Melissa Fracker drove in two runs without the benefit of a hit.
Broughton fired the one-hitter against Notre Dame while Legros fired one against Bethel, whiffing 10 batters along the way. The one hit Legros allowed was a sharp single by the first batter she faced in the bottom of the first. Legros struck out the next three batters she faced and settled in from there.
Through 11 games, the âHawks are batting .362 with a gaudy .544 slugging percentage (thanks to 16 doubles, 13 triples and 6 home runs). In the last six games, Ciaccia is 9-of-14 (.643) with a double, triple and seven runs scored. In the last five games, Legros is 8-of-15 (.533) with two doubles, a triple, and nine RBI. And in the last seven games, Katie Schmidt is 10-of-20 (.500) with two doubles, a triple, a homer and six runs scored.
All that offense has overshadowed a strong pitching effort as Legros, Broughton and Mariale Renna have allowed just seven earned runs in 73 innings of work â a 0.64 earned run average. On top of that, Barry has been spectacular in the field at the third sack while Shimko â an infielder as a freshman â has been stellar behind the dish.
The âHawks were slated for a trip to Danbury on Wednesday to take on Immaculate and were in New Milford on Thursday before returning home Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to host Pomperaug, Greenwich and Bunnell in a very busy week.

GIRLS TENNIS
New Milford 4, Newtown 3
Newtown 7, Brookfield 0
Newtown 7, Bethel 0
Except for coming up on the short side of an epic struggle against New Milford, it was a pretty darn good week for the Newtown High School girlsâ tennis team. Wins over Brookfield and Bethel, the Lady Nighthawks improved to 4-4 overall.
It all started with a 4-3 loss to New Milford last week in which four of the seven individual matches went to a third set and another went to a second-set tiebreaker. Only Lauren DeFelice and Nikia McFadden at No. 3 doubles had a comfortable time, easing their way to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caryn Lieberman and Laura Mahar.
But at every other spot in the rotation, it was a struggle.
Christina Ciamarra earned a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Alyssa Durno at No. 2 singles ⦠but it was the only singles win the âHawks enjoyed on the afternoon. Kristene Salbu, Maxx Zimmer and Erin Nemeth all went down â but certainly not without a bitter fight as Salbu fell 6-1, 1-6, 6-3; Zimmer fell 6-4, 6-4; and Nemeth fell 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Jenna Moser and Katie Serock had the only other win at No. 1 doubles and avoided a third set in the 6-1, 7-6 win over Alyssa Neill and Jessica Granger by winning that second-set with a grueling 9-7 tiebreaker.
The âHawks followed up with a 7-0 win over Brookfield. Each match was a straight set sweep as Salbu, Ciamarra, Zimmer and Jenna Himmelfarb earned singles wins and the duos of Moser/Serock, McFadden/DeFelice and Charlotte Manos/Nemeth earned doubles wins.
Against Bethel, the locals were so dominant they only gave up six games in comfortable, straight set sweeps across the board. Jenna Himmelfarb stepped up to No. 3 singles and earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maya Chang and Rachele Cox stepped up to No. 4 singles and earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sarah Xie.
The âHawks were scheduled for a visit at Immaculate on Wednesday and will return home Monday and Tuesday to host Stratford and Masuk. A busy week will continue with visits to Joel Barlow on Wednesday and Pomperaug on Thursday.

With two losses in their first three matches, there might have been cause for some nervousness within the Newtown High School boysâ tennis team.
There shouldnât be any of that lingering, though, since the Nighthawks are in the midst of a six-match winning streak after wins over New Milford (twice), Masuk, Brookfield and Bethel boosted their record to 7-2 overall, 5-2 in the South-West Conference.
The most telling win was a 5-2 defeat of Brookfield on Monday. The âHawks had experienced a lot of thrillers against the Bobcats, but hadnât beaten their foe in four years. And the No. 3 doubles team of Adam Feldman and Dan Cassidy and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Casey Tenney and Colin Jacob provided most of the thrills in this one.
Feldman and Cassidy essentially clinched the overall match for the locals with their third straight victory, staving off a comeback by a plucky Brookfield duo. Tyler Raps and Saleem Ahmend won four straight games after trailing 4-1 in the second set, but local duo hung on to win in a tie-breaker, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Soon afterward, the freshmen duo of Tenney and Jacob staged a comeback of their own, perhaps one of the most dramatic in recent memory. Trailing 6-2, 4-0 midway through the second set, they captured the next six games to win the second set, 6-4, and then won a closely-fought third set by an identical score.
Chris Meier, Evan Batzer and Adam Wenick won their singles matches.
The âHawks defeated New Milford twice â by identical 5-2 tallies. In both matches, the locals swept the doubles events with Evan Batzer and Adam Wenick winning their singles events in both matches.
The second time around, though, Wenick, had a monumental struggle with Geoff Winkley, dropping the first set before rallying for a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 win. Batzer swept Mike Carey fore the second time in a week, but the second time around it was a considerably tougher 7-6 (7-6), 6-0 win. Batzer saved a set point in that first set when one of his shots skidded after hitting a ball that Carey had left on his own side of the court.
The way things timed out, though, Justin Carotti and freshman Max Payner, playing together for the first time, actually clinched the overall match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alex Wojdak and Derek Kaigle.
The âHawks topped Masuk, 6-1, in a rain-shortened affair that was decided with eight-game pro sets. Feldman and Cassidy, playing together for the first time, posted an impressive 8-3 win over Larry Ross and Joe Vuto while Tenney and Jacob, keeping their heads, rebounded from a 4-1 deficit to win the next six games and close out the contest at 8-5.
With a 6-1 win over Bethel on Tuesday, the âHawks clinched a berth in the state tournament. Newtownâs only loss came at first singles, where Mario Roehrs narrowed a 1-5 first set gap before losing 6-4, 6-1 to an unusually talented freshman, Kyle Hines.
Chris Meier, Batzer and Wenick won straight set singles events. The doubles were a bit closer, but all straight set wins. Dave Wilkins and Ben Wicki, playing together for the first time this season, squeaked out a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over PJ Closius and Kris Karvelis.
The âHawks were slated to meet Immaculate on Wednesday and New Fairfield on Thursday. Next week, they will visit Stratford on Monday before hosting Joel Barlow on Wednesday and Pomperaug on Thursday to close out the regular season.

Joel Barlow 9, Newtown 8
Newtown 14, Notre Dame 6
Bethel 9, Newtown 3
After a tough loss to New Fairfield back on April 23, the Newtown High School baseball team was expecting to rebound pretty well.
After all, the schedule featured Joel Barlow, Notre Dame and Bethel. Notre Dame wasnât considered a strong team and the Nighthawks had already dispatched Joel Barlow and Bethel rather easily earlier in the season.
Well, whatâs that people say about the best laid plans â¦
The âHawks defeated Notre Dame, but fell to Barlow and Bethel and saw their record dip to 6-5 overall.
The loss to Barlow might have stung the most since the âHawks â thanks to a two hits, two runs scored, two RBI and a home run from Ryan McGrath â were nursing an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jake Raiff belted a three-run triple off Mike Tibbetts to win the game.
The locals recovered the following day with a 14-6 shellacking of Notre Dame. PJ Cochrane doubled, homered (his first) and drove in four runs while Seth Hull delivered a solo home run, his second of the season. Tony Gallucci, batting a gaudy .500 (10-of-20) through 10 games, tripled for the second time this season while Joe DeVellis doubled in a pair of runs.
Gallucci, Alex Magoulas and Jake DeVellis all drove in runs.
The âHawks did most of their damage in the first inning, scoring eight times and knocking two pitchers out of the box. The Lancers were forced to use five arms while, for the âHawks, Ryan McGrath went the distance and improved to 3-2 with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
The âHawks were looking for their seventh win on Monday and took a 2-0 lead on the Wildcats in the top of the first, but the locals faltered â allowing a run in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second â and could never recover.
The locals collected nine hits off Josh Vaghi, but doubles by Magoulas and Tibbetts and a triple by McGrath didnât do enough damage. Randy Leinhardt had a big day for the âCats with a double, triple and two RBI.
Newtown was looking to rebound on Wednesday with a home game against Immaculate. They traveled to New Milford on Thursday and on Saturday will be in Cooperstown, New York, to take on Pomperaug in a trip postponed earlier in the season due to snow. Next week, the locals will host Pomperaug on Monday and Bunnell on Wednesday.
