Considered to be one of the funniest, most outrageous social satires of the past century, the musical is based on the 1936 propaganda scare film of the same name, which dramatizes the dangers of smoking the “Demon Weed.”

The cast of characters includes sugary-sweet kids, overly concerned parents, sensuous reefer tramps, and demonic pimps and pushers.

Auditions will be held at TheatreWorks on Monday, May 7, and Tuesday, May 8, from 7 to 9 pm. The call seeks a cast of seven men and seven women, ages 16 to 60.

Those auditioning should dress comfortably, and must come prepared with 16 bars (preferably from Reefer Madness). An accompanist will be provided.

All actors will also perform readings from the script as well as a short dance combination that will be taught at the audition. The musical is under the direction of Sharon A. Wilcox of Torrington.

All roles are available and both professionals and amateurs are welcome. No appointments are necessary. TheatreWorks offers a stipend to all performers, technicians, and directors. For character breakdowns and directions visit TheatreWorks.us.

Rehearsals will begin in mid-May (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings), with performances beginning July 13 and running through August 11, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

TheatreWorks is an award-winning, professional, non-Equity theatre company at 5 Brookside Avenue, just off Route 202 (next to CVS).
