KAHN/SELESNICKâS âEISBERGFREISTADTâ ON VIEW AT PEPPER GALLERY
avv/lsb set 5/4 #698812
BOSTON, MASS. â Pepper Gallery presents Kahn/Selesnickâs newest series âEisbergfriestadt,â on view till June 9. As with their previous work, Kahn/Selesnick have invented a completely self-contained world with its own history and mythology.
According to Kahn/Selesnick, the principality of Eisbergfriestadt âwas inspired by an actual incident in 1923 when a mammoth iceberg ran aground in the Baltic port of Lubeck, towering over the town and terrifying the populace. Many decided â not reasonably â that the ice caps were melting and the apocalypse coming.â
In an apparent response to current environmental concerns, Kahn/Selesnick approach the issues of global warming and the ensuing chaos with humor and histrionic prophecy.
In addition to signature panoramic photographs, the exhibition includes drawings and prints as well as an elaborate installation that consists of an assembly of objects. A wide selection of artifacts ranges from the mundane to the eccentric.
Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick, born in New York City and London, respectively, have been collaborating since 1986. They have exhibited internationally, and their work is included in many collections including the Smithsonian Institution, Addison Gallery of American art, Brooklyn Museum, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
The gallery is at 38 Newbury Street. For information, www.peppergalleryboston.com or 617-236-4497.
