John Kolb Engelberger, 84, of Brookfield died peacefully March 28. He was born December 31, 1930, to Irene Kolb and Joseph Heinrich Engelberger, in Bridgeport.

His brother Joseph F. Engelberger of Newtown; daughters Jan Durand and Kim DeBoer, and her and husband David, of Napa, Calif.; granddaughters Samantha and Abby Durand of Newport, R.I.; grandsons Michael and Myles DeBoer of Napa; two great-grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members survive Mr Engelberger. He was predeceased by his wife, Jo, and son, John Ramsey Engelberger.

His life was greatly lived. He will be remembered most for his generosity, compassionate heart, and the happiness he brought to so many.

Upon graduation from Bassick High School in Bridgeport in 1948, he enrolled at the University of Connecticut, became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, and received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1952.

Mr Engelberger married his high school sweetheart, Lula Josephine “Jo” Gathings, on August 30, 1952, and enlisted as lieutenant in the Air Force shortly thereafter. Once honorably discharged in 1954, he began his career as an engineer in Concord, Mass., and Nashua, N.H., before relocating to Brookfield in 1964, where they raised their family.

His knowledge and ambition led him to sales and management, and to ultimately become president of Consolidated Controls Corporation, Condec, and Eaton in Bethel. He retired in 1993.

Mr Engelberger was an avid skier and sailor. He enjoyed being surrounded by his family and good company, working on his cars, traveling, gardening, and cooking. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed and live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and be forever loved.
