Elizabeth T. Porter

Former Newtown    Resident

Elizabeth “Betty” T. Porter, 78, died April 23. She was born on March 19, 1928, in Milford to George Wallace Thorpe and Hazel Kinney Thorpe. Mrs Porter was a longtime resident of Newtown, where she resided during the 60s and 70s.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita Porter, with whom she lived in California for the past several years; her grandson Sean Hernandez; several cousins; a loving church family; and very good friends, including Sally, Barbara, Connie, Mary Lou, Gert, Jean, and, of course, the Tuesday Group.

She spent her early years in Milford, before moving to Middletown, where she lived during her elementary and high school years. Mrs Porter graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1946, and then attended the University of Bridgeport, graduating with an associate’s degree.

She worked many jobs, from nanny to office administrator to reading tutor, before going to work as an administrator for the Anderson School of Business at UCLA. Her hobbies included flower arranging, bird watching, walking, reading, and enjoying high tea. Mrs Porter was also known to listen to Art Bell on Coast-to-Coast radio. She also volunteered as a reading tutor at Overland Elementary School in Los Angeles for three years.

Mrs Porter was a kind and wonderful soul, and will be greatly missed by all.

A memorial service is planned for 1 pm on Sunday, May 7, at Westwood Hills Congregational UCC Church in Los Angeles. Services will be officiated by the Rev Kirsten M. Linford and the Rev John David Webster.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City OK 73123-1718.
