Relay Luminaries Will Shine Bright

With Community’s Support

The lights will shine bright with remembrance and tribute during the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Newtown June 10, but not without the community’s support.

Photographs are needed for this beautiful beginning to the ceremony in which to serve as the backdrop in the form of a slideshow, both honoring and remembering those affected by cancer.

“As a survivor myself, I feel honored to give back to the community,” said Missy Desrochers, luminaria chairman of this year’s Relay For Life. “Not only are we raising money for cancer research, we are paying tribute to our loved ones by sharing their stories and giving hope to others. Every candle lit and every photo displayed has a significant place in this ceremony. It truly is the heart of this event.

“Every person who has endured the obstacles presented by cancer must surround themselves with hope,” Ms Desrochers said. “It is what keeps you going.”

Having lost her grandfather to cancer, watching her mom successfully overcome her two-year battle with the disease and then learning of her sister’s diagnosis, Ms Desrochers is quite familiar with the strength of hope.

“Embracing hope can give us peace during the most difficult of times, times when it seems there is nothing else,” she said. “It is truly the precise theme for this year’s event.”

Photographs for the Luminary Ceremony must include names of those in the photos and whether it is “In Memory of” or “In Honor of.” They need to be submitted by May 15 in digital format via email to RelayPictures@gmail.com or CD/DVD provided to Missy Desrochers.
