On The Diamonds ... Youth Softball Highlights

Youth softball results from this past week are as follow:

U6

Diamond Electrical Supply vs Zoar Ridge Stables: Diamond Electrical Supply led off the batting with Hailey Avari, followed by Aidan Herbstman, both with solid base hits up the middle. To complete the inning, Amanda Colonel had a nice shot that brought everyone home. The next inning, Ava Foss made a nice grab at shortstop throwing it to first for the out, great way to start the season.

Taunton Press vs Diamond Electrical Supply: The Taunton Press looked impressive in their season opener. Katelyn Zaniewski had a hot bat ripping the ball down the first baseline. Shannon Kelleher scorched a liner down to third base. Ashley Hubner played exceptional defense, including a terrific throw for a put out. Brenna Navin played solidly all around for the Taunton Press. For Diamond Electric, Abigail McManus and Olivia Bonacci both had shots into the outfield. Julia Calabrese had a great hit and many awesome defensive plays at first base. Sarah Walsh-Herde also contributed with a drive to third base. It was a great doubleheader day for Diamond Electrical Supply’s first games of the season.

For Zoar Ridge Stables, Tessa Bigwarfe started off with a solid hit toward the third base line. Maddie Greenhaw and Molly McCleary also had hot bats, delivering concrete shots for the line up. Victoria Lewis led the team in defensive plays along with Scarlett Long who fielded two ground balls.

U8

Newtown Hardware 4, Carminuccio’s Pizza 3: With her team trailing 3-0, Juliette Cryder smashed a grand slam home run to lead Newtown Hardware to victory. Julie Hess, Allison Hechler, and Virginia Hepp led the offensive attack. Natalie Horn and Danielle Blanco pitched well. For Carminuccio’s, excellent pitching was received from Erin Phaneuf and Grace McEneaney in the early innings to keep the opponents off the score sheet. The offense was sparked by the hot bats of Angela Carriero and Lenie Urbina.

Papa Al’s Pizza 1, Associated Refuse 0: Papa Al’s Pizza defeated Associated Refuse 1-0 in a U-8 softball battle at Reed School. Papa Al’s Pizza was led offensively by Ally Daoust, Emma Archiere, and Tori Stevens each with 2 hits. Rebecca Alicea and Tori Stevens also made great defensive plays on the field.

Blue Lighting 1, Green Monsters 0: With some great fielding and a few excellent hits, the Blue Lighting prevailed.

Extreme Fitness Martial Arts 2, Blueline Designs 1: An outstanding pitching outing for Extreme Fitness Martial Arts led by Allie Eurell, Rachel Daum, and Abi Clarke paved the way for a hard-fought opening day win for Extreme Fitness Martial Arts. Strong defensive plays were made by Leah Navin at 2nd base and Rachel Daum at first base. Rachel had an excellent grab of a hard hit ground ball that helped to earn her the first of the weekly game balls handed out by the Extreme Fitness coaches. Elizabeth DiMaria scored from third on a single from Abi Clarke and Elizabeth Maker had the second run batted in, knocking in Allie Eurell for the winning run. For Blueline Designs opening game, Sienna Cummings, Sarah Dowling, and Rachel O’Grady were impressive on the mound, as well as Sienna with a hit, Sarah with two hits and a run, and Rachel with two base hits. Sasha Allen had a big hit and great defensive plays were made by Nicole Lillis, Emily Krasnickas, and Chloe Freedman.

Newtown Savings Bank 5, Nuzzo Electric 1: In her pitching debut, Noel Carbone pitched two scoreless innings for Newtown Savings Bank. Erin Burns also pitched well and started the offensive when she drove in Gabrielle Calbo with Newtown Savings first run of the season. Kendra Saunders had two hits, scored two runs, and was spectacular behind the plate. Jackie Gouvieia had two doubles and drove in 4 runs for Newtown Savings Bank. For Nuzzo Electric, in the first inning, Lindsay Dievert had a base hit for the Nuzzo Electric Gators. In the top of the second, Joy Metzger hit a triple, bringing Heather Stroili home and tying the score. In the bottom of the second, Heather Stroili struck out two batters, but Newtown Savings Bank scored two more runs, despite seamless teamwork by Stroili and first baseman Julia Anderson. Nuzzo Electric didn’t score in the third or fourth innings, despite base hits by Anderson, Stroili and Joy Metzger. In the last inning, hits by Lindsay Dievert, Zoe Beals, and Julia Anderson left the bases loaded. Emma McGrath came through with a strong hit, but was out at first to end the game.

Brookfield 4, Michael Scott Financial Group 3: For MSFG, Sarah Brittin, Victoria Weimann, and Samantha Black were on the mound and pitched very well. There were base hits by Lisa Price, Lindsey Sherwood, and Amanda Berry. Abigail Pereira capped off a rally with a 2-run homer to center field.

U12

Claim Services International 11, WellBaskets.com 7: Claim Services International started its 2011 season with an opening day victory. Sydney Flint, Sarah Spillane, and Ashley Gong each gave strong performances from the pitching mound, striking out 9 batters. Jackie Sgobbo got things started offensively in the third with a single, and two batters later Hanna Bigwarfe drove in the team’s first run of the season. CSI rallied with four runs in both the third and fourth innings. Cassidy Keller reached base three times and scored three runs. Defense was led by Kelsey Nicholson and Mee Mee Filan with solid plays in the infield. Tina DeMaio and Jenna Carvalho made key plays in the sixth inning to seal the win for CSI. It was the opening game and a stinging loss for the Killer Bees sponsored by WellBaskets.com. Early on WellBaskets.com dominated the game with strong pitching by Annie Hoffman who was able to fend off any hits from Claim Services International as the game got underway. Great hitting was provided by Kayla O’Sullivan, Rylee Mulligan, Kaelana Dauber, and Sammie Stroccia and strong fielding by Tegan Doherty, Bella Luciano, and Kayla O’Sullivan. Lexi Tucker also hit a hard double with 1 RBI.

WellBaskets.com 19, New England Bounce About 3: New England Bounce About had solid pitching performances from Emily Bell and Shannon Lynch. Lauren Wilcox pitched 1 scoreless inning. Shannon smashed the first hit of the new season for NE Bounce About that drove in a run in the first inning. Jamie Fellin and Lauren had great defensive plays. Claire Hull did a spectacular job catching the hard-throwing pitching of Lauren. Excellent pitching by WellBaskets.com players Tegan Doherty, Rylee Mulligan, and Lexi Tucker kept the hits at bay against opponent New England Bounce About. Contributing to the score were Lexi Tucker and Tegan Doherty with 2 singles apiece, Kaelana Dauber with a single, and heads-up base running by Allison Silkowski.

Claim Services International 25, Peace Love and Cupcakes 2: Claim Services International goes to 2-0 relying on its pitching and defense against Peace Love and Cupcakes. Sydney Flint, Sarah Spillane, and Ashley Gong again gave strong performances from the pitching mound. Kelsey Nicholson drove in two runs on a hard single to right field. Cassidy Keller, Tina DeMaio and Caitlyn Linden each had singles driving in runs. Defense was led by Hanna Bigwarfe, who caught a towering fly ball to left field and from the catcher position connected with Caitlyn Linden to throw out a player stealing third base. Mee Mee Filan, Sarah Spillane, and Jenna Carvalho each made solid plays defensively to keep the Peace Love and Cupcakes off the scoreboard. For PeaceLoveandCupcakesCT.com, Alli Morrill, Samatha Cody, Kaitlyn Pierce and Jillian Gibney led the offense. Sophie Ackert and Alexa Horkachuck pitched strong and the defense was anchored by Avery Tannebaum with Cassidy Datin behind the plate for three strong innings.

U14

My Place 18, Sherman 14: For the My Place team offensively, Annie Hoffman had 5 RBIs with a single and a triple, while Brianna Baranowski delivered a bases-clearing grand slam. Tonya Tucker and Annie Hoffman pitched well. Defensively, Brianna Baranowski, Kathryn Kerins and Ally Morrill all played well for My Place. For the Sherman Knights, Clare Dwyer delivered a 2-run double and Sam Seiden had a key hit leading the offense. Defensively, Brianna Miller had a good day at second base.
