Low Maintenance Landscapes, May 12

At Newtown Senior Center

On Wednesday, May 12, at 7:30 pm, Carl Salsedo, PhD, will present a program for The Town and Country Garden Club of Newtown called “Low Maintenance Landscapes.” The program, which is free and open to the public, will be at Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook.

Mr Salsedo is an extension educator in the Sustainable and Environmental Horticulture Department at UConn. He teaches, lectures, and writes about his passion: sustainable agriculture, a huge issue in the United States and around the world.

“Growing our own food presents many challenges and should be a more natural process free of pesticides and other chemicals,” said Mr Salsedo. “We, as gardeners, can help this process in our own backyards by utilizing native plants as much as possible that would eliminate the need for outside inputs of fertilizers and pesticides that can be a source of runoff or source pollution.”

Many native plants have low water and maintenance requirements. Once established, these types of plants require little care.  So as backyard gardeners, we along with millions of other households doing similar things, can have a cumulative and positive effect on the environment.
