A Poor Example
A Poor Example
To the Editor:
Like it or not, any person serving on any board or commission is held to a higher standard than an ordinary citizen. Anything said by an elected official is heard in larger volume. Any action taken is more meaningful. Part of the Board of Educationâs responsibility is to ensure the safety of Newtownâs children.
That being said, over the weekend, Tom Gissen, an elected Board of Education member, chose to have an after-prom party. Even when a safe alternative was being offered by the Newtown High School PTSA. The PTSA worked very hard to provide a safe place for the students to continue their prom night celebration. No alcohol, but a great deal of entertainment.
Not only did he set a poor example for his child, but he put other children in danger too. There was a great deal of alcohol present and he did nothing. Even in the wee hours of the morning when the party was clearly out of control, he did nothing. He had ample time to react and he did not. The police had to be called, the parents had to be called, and the police issued citations. Tomâs actions show a complete and total lack of judgment. He completely undermined the efforts of the PTSA. Parents should be outraged.
Where do we go from here? The Board of Education must show some leadership here and now. Anything short of Tom Gissenâs resignation from the board will not be enough.
Sincerely,
Kathy Fetchick
