Art Show At St Rose Reflected A Year Of Work

By Shannon Hicks

The Parish Hall of St Rose of Lima Church was abuzz with activity a few hours after school let out one afternoon last week. On Wednesday, May 2, students of St Rose School returned to school grounds for a few hours to look back at a school year’s worth of work — work that had been done in the art room.

There was music, refreshments, and plenty to admire. There were dragonflies that had been done by pre-K–5 students, which had been hung so that they created an archway for the students and their families to walk under. There were also paper creations, clay creations, masks, drawings, photographs, paintings, sculpture, and paper fans representing creative efforts by the students of the parochial school.

About 90 minutes into the two-hour event show, the first and second grade chorus entertained the crowd with a song, and then St Rose art teacher Vanessa LaFerriere announced the winners of the show’s different divisions. A lovely tile piece depicting a palm tree, created by seventh grade student Rachel Hyland, was named Best in Show.

Also being honored on Wednesday night were Nick Gerbo, who won Best 6th Grade Work of Art for his closeup photo of a nature scene; Elyse Bokiniewicz, Best 7th Grade Work of Art for her series of drawings depicting shoes; Greg Davis, Best 8th Grade Work of Art, for “Dog Series”; Tara Dawley, Best Photography, for her stark photo of signs; Brian Diaz-Reynoso, Best Painting, for a palm tree scene; and Bridget Powers, Best Sculpture, “Boot of Italy,” a collage piece she had created on a lady’s boot.

In addition, Seth Morris won Honorable Mention for “House,” which Ms LaFerriere described as “a cardboard Christo-like creation,” and Alexandra Hamar was also an Honorable Mention honoree for her drawing “Lion.”
