Plants Out Of Place

DERBY — Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society in cooperation with the Department of Environment Protection’s (DEP’s) Kellogg Environmental Center will host a program, “Plants Out of Place,” on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 pm.

Rose Hiskes, an agricultural research technician at the CT Agricultural Experiment Station Valley Laboratory in Windsor, will give a slide presentation on weeds commonly found in Connecticut. After a short botany lesson, about thirty weeds will be described through slides, herbarium specimens and, when possible, live samples.

Sustainable management options will be given relative to the life cycle and method of reproduction of each weed. Ms Hiskes will also discuss edible wild plants — how to make weeds part of a meal.

The program will take place at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue (off Route 34).

A donation of $4 for adults and $2 for students for non-members of Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society is requested.

For further information, directions or to register, call the Kellogg Environmental Center at 734-2513 or contact Dennis Kocyla at 734-9325.
