Cave Comics Hosts

Free Comic Book Day

By Eliza Hallabeck

By early afternoon on Saturday, May 5, Cave Comics owner Pat Calanan estimated more than 5,300 people had visited his Church Hill Road store for Free Comic Book Day, and the day was far from over.

“It is the busiest day of the year,” said Mr Calanan.

With customers searching through shelves and lining up to be helped at the register, it was certainly busy just after 2 pm.

Cave Comics has been in business for 23 years, says Mr Calanan, and has marked Free Comic Book Day for the past ten years.

Cave Comics is in the western half of the former railroad station at 57 Church Hill Road, and was open during its normal Saturday business hours for Free Comic Book Day, from 11 am until 7 pm.

Free Comic Book Day is a single day — the first Saturday in May each year — when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away a comic book absolutely free to anyone who visits.

Some of the day’s highlights included Michael Mongillo, the creator and writer of the recently released The Lost Girl from Arcana Comics, visiting the store to sign copies of his new book, and one visitor early in the morning attending Free Comic Book Day dressed as the Hulk, a Marvel superhero.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Mr Calanan about the day.

Free Comic Book Day has been so popular at Cave Comics, Mr Calanan said he is thinking of holding a second similar event near Halloween, which would offer themed comics for free.

Photos taken during the day, including a shot of the Hulk, will be added to Cave Comic’s Facebook page. Search for “Cave Comics” when logged in to Facebook.
