Hosts âPatti Smith: Camera Soloâ
DETROIT, MICH. â âPatti Smith: Camera Solo,â will be on view at Detroit Institute of Arts Museum, June 1 through September 2. This is the first American museum exhibition to focus on the photography of artist, poet and performer Patti Smith.
Smithâs photographs are infused with personal meaning and highlight the rich relationships between art, architecture, poetry and the everyday. The exhibition includes 70 black and white gelatin silver prints and a small selection of original Polaroid prints and items from Smithâs personal collection.
In the era of digital imaging and manipulation, Smithâs works champion the use of photography in its most classical sense: as a tool to document a âfoundâ moment. She finds the poetic qualities of a particular time and place and captures that beauty on film. The photographs explore themes that have been significant in Smithâs work, including poets and writers, portraiture, travel, art and architecture.
Detroit Institute of Arts is at 5200 Woodward Avenue. For information, 313-833-7900 or www.dia.org.
