Shoplifting

Police said they received a report about 2:30 pm on May 4 that store security staff at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street had a suspected shoplifter in custody, so police went there to investigate.

Police said they charged a boy under age 18 with sixth-degree larceny for allegedly stealing merchandise from the store.

Police released the boy into the custody of his mother for a May 21 court appearance. State law shields the identity of people under age 18 who arrested on criminal charges.

Unsafe Passing

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Lone Oak Meadow Road, at about 9:48 pm on May 6.

The accident involved motorist Patrick Hanrahan, 47, of Danbury, who was driving a 2005 Subaru Impreza station wagon, and motorist Nikoletta Topkas, 32, of Norwalk, who was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus sedan, police said.

In that incident, the Subaru attempted to pass the Ford as the Ford was attempting to make a turn, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Hanrahan a written warning for unsafe passing.

Truck Hits Tree

Police said that driver Robert Colburn, 63, of New Milford was driving a Kenworth truck eastward on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Stone Bridge Trail, at about 4:27 am on May 9, when the truck crossed over the center line of the road, went off the westbound road shoulder and then struck a tree.

The vehicle that Colburn was driving was tractor-trailer truck whose trailer was a tanker which was empty, police said.

Colburn was transported to Danbury Hospital to be evaluated for possible injuries, police said. Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters responded to the incident. Police said the accident is under investigation.
