Seniors

Gold 11, New Milford Silver 10: The Senior Gold team won a thriller on Friday night against New Milford. Julia Wiberg scored the game-winning goal with 40 seconds left off of a sweet feed from Julia Sughrue. Wiberg then got the ensuing draw control which iced the game for Newtown. The defense for Newtown was led by Meg Kelleher and Dori Farley. Celia Gold led the team in ground ball controls and Sughrue led the team in assists. The offense was led by Sughrue, Wiberg, Lauren Zimmerman, Nicole Zaccaro, Meghan Doyle and Quinn Karp.

Shelton 13, Blue 4: The Blue team played a tough team in Shelton . In the loss Leah Hushion and Sami Arnold were solid in the goal-splitting time. While Nevan Gattey led the team in assists, Cam Morris, Tessa Leon-Gambetta and Annie O’Connor all had multiple ground balls. Goals were scored by Emily Dirga, Laken Hughes and Sarah Frascatore

Easton 7, Blue 3: Nevan Gattey and Tessa Leon-Gambetta were great in goal, while the defense was led by Annie O’Connor and Simone Afriyie. The offense was led by Madison Ventresca, Grace Sandercox and Sam Arnold. Cam Morris and Grace Sandercox hustled their way to multiple ground balls.

Juniors

The Golden Girls sweep the Simsbury Stickfest: The Newtown Gold 6th Grade girls lacrosse team marched through the opposition on a rainy Saturday to capture 1st place in the Simsbury Stickfest. The story of the day was the dominating defense and goaltending of the Newtown girls, as well as a potent and quick-striking transition attack. Game scores are as follows: Newtown 8 vs Wilton 5A 1; Newtown 5 vs West Hartford 4; Newtown 8 vs Duxbury Mass., 6A 1; Newtown 8 vs Madison 6A 4; Newtown 7 vs Greenwich 5A 4

Larchmont Mamaroneck 7, Blue (5th grade) 6: The Junior Girls Blue 5 team took on the highly skilled Larchmont-Mamaroneck 5 lacrosse team Sunday. The Newtown girls played their best game to date by far, picking up ground balls with grace and ease and distributing and shooting better than ever. Tess Hubbard, Jenna Lavelle and Kiera Sughrue used their blazing speed to race up and down the field on offense and defense, while Cate Herrick, Alison Kelleher and Keeley Kortze defended with tenacity. Lina Stubbs played fantastic in the goal, keeping it close. The Blue team had their skills and desire tested and proved to everyone they can play with the best, but lost a game that saw the lead change hands more than ten times.

Junior Blue at Simsbury Stickfest tournament: On a rain soaked and muddy field the Newtown Junior Blue team had three hard-fought games. Game 1 against the Greenwich 5A team who eventually made it to the finals, was a 6-1 defeat. The bright spot in the game was the stick work and agility of goalie, Marissa Lametto. She made some impressive saves. In Game 2 against Madison 6A the team hustled like crazy. Hannah Holmes and Carli Carpenter played solid defense and the team improved overall, but the 6th grade team proved to be too superior and took the game 6-0. It all came together in Game 3 against the Simbury 5/6 team with a come-from-behind win, 7-4. Goalie Courtney Carroll played with zeal, while Emma Riebe, Claire Dubois and Morgan Sclafani controlled the midfield. Kayla O’Rorke and Elizabeth Sally also fought hard for the win.

Gold 13, New Fairfield 5: The Golden Girls began a long stretch of games with a dominate performance against New Fairfield. The Newtown defense, led by Lexi Leidlein and Julia Haskins, allowed only eight shots on goal for the game. Rachel Tomasino netted a goal from a difficult angle. The scoring was spread out among nine players, including Katie McCabe who scored her first career goal.

Madison 8, Gold 7: Newtown lost a tough match to a very athletic Madison team. Marcella Daily led the team with four ground balls and two assists. Lauren Carrino led the team with three goals, and Hanna Rosenthal recorded a goal on a strong one-on-one move.

Gold 8 vs New Milford 4: Newtown was sloppy from the start but was able to hold off a feisty New Milford team. Charlie Condon dominated the ground ball battle by scooping six, while Cassidy Kortze chipped in with four ground balls of her own. Rylee Mulligan had an assist, an interception and grabbed three ground balls. Dylan Zahansky found the back of the net three times to lead all scorers.

Gold 9 vs RELax 7: Alex Futterman played brilliantly in goal and held off a late RELax surge to preserve the win. Newtown’s defense was led by Kira Smith, and Danielle Samson was all over the field from her midfield position. Jenna Carvahlo and Hayley Lambert each netted a goal, and Carvahlo assisted on another.

Darien 6A 11, Gold 10: The Newtown girls showed tremendous effort in this one-goal loss. Darien, known to have the strongest lacrosse program in the state of Connecticut, had all they could handle from the Golden Girls. Riley Mulligan played a strong two-way game by sparking the Newtown transition offense with three assists and playing aggressive defense from her midfield position. Liz Hodge made eight saves from her goaltending position in the second half. Charlie Condon and Marcella Daily each had two goals and three ground balls. Lexi Leidlein, Lauren Carrino, Cassidy Kortze and Julia Haskins provided a relentless and impressive defensive effort that neutralized a dominate Darien attack. Dylan Zahansky led all scorers with five goals.

 Lightning Girls

Greenwich 4, Newtown 1: Newtown had a strong showing against a very good Greenwich this past week. In the loss Kelsey Pearson and Catie Gregory had seven saves combined in the net. Megan LeBlanc led the offense.

Newtown 8, Pomperaug 1: Newtown bounced back with a strong showing against Pomperaug. Lesey Pearson and Gigi Marino were awesome, splitting time in the goal. Margaret O’Sullivan, Caroline Brown and Casey Dunn played great defense and limited Pomperaug’s opportunities for shots on goal. Alexa Gordon and Colleen Phaneuf led the team in assists, while Kaley Meisenheimer and Megan LeBlanc led in draw controls. Anna LeBanca led the team in grounds balls. The offense was led by Rylee Harrell, Katie Ryan, Hannah Groonell and Summer Pisacich. Veronica Kroha, Mae Petit, Kaitlyn King all played strong midfield with Olivia Steare, Jillian Carrino and Katherine Trammel on attack, who made sure the Lightning team dominated in ball possession and shots on goal.

Ridgefield 3, Newtown 2: In a very close game, Kelsey Pearson and Catie Gregory worked very hard in the goal and blocked many great shots to keep the score to a minimum. Kaley Meisenheimer, Ashley Hammond, Kaitlyn King, Gigi Marino, Caroline Brown, Maria Pagliaro, Colleen Phaneuf, Hannah Groonell, Summer Pisacich and Katie Ryan all gave their best efforts on defense to slow Ridgefield. Anna LaBanca, Ella Marsh, Margaret O’Sullivan, Catie Gregory, Camryn Griffin and Olivia Steare led the offense.

Boys

U11

Lightning Gold 9, Guilford 6: Newtown took control of the action from the start. First goal was fluid, with an assist from Forrest Anderson to Garrett Norberg. Jake Meyer followed with a half field charge to goal, scoring for Newtown. Then, off the face off, Aiden Coleman went straight to goal, bringing the score to 3-0 Newtown. Guilford attempted to score, but couldn’t cut thru Newtown’s defense of Andre Sokk and Nick Cappelli. Newtown continued to attack as Declan Sughrue assisted to Garret Norberg for goal followed by a side arm shot to the net by Tucker Garritty with an assist from Aiden Coleman. Strong offensive efforts from Brendan Hall, Kyle Sullivan, Thomas Coppinger and Will Swierbut. Goalie, Kyle Burbank was fearless, battling a flurry of shots as they got on the board. Newtown retaliated with an assist from Tucker Garritty to Vincent Genovese. Guilford followed with a goal, bringing the score to 6-4 Newtown. Newtown’s offense never stopped as Declan Sughrue charged right to the goal after the face off to score. Newtown’s tag team, Tucker Garritty assist to Garrett Norberg, added to Newtown’s score. Dynamic defensive efforts were shown by Gren Paynter and Tanner Stergue, stopping Guilford as they peppered shots to Newtown’s goal. With two minutes left to play, Jake Meyer capped the scoring.

Bantams

Newtown 6, Ridgefield Tigers 2: After beating New Milford 14-2, in a game in which almost every Hawk scored a goal, Newtown faced the powerhouse Ridgefield Tigers on Saturday night at Treadwell Park. Newtown got off to a quick start when Mathew Carpenter scored the first goal. Ridgefield answered right back on their next possession to even the score. In the second quarter Jeffrey Garrity was assisted by Eric Burbank to give Newtown the lead. Once again Ridgefield answered to tie the game. Just before the end of the half Newtown regained the lead on a goal by attackman Luke Wellman. Newtown went back to work in the second half with goals by attackman Tristan Andrew and midfielder Mathew Carpenter. Newtown defensemen Riley Ward, James Iarpoli and Ryan Ruddy dominated in the second half, shutting down the Ridgefield offense. Goalie Jake Dandrea made several highlight saves to keep Ridgefield off the scoreboard in the second half. Midfielders Luke Hannan, William Wallace and Garrity won a combined seven faceoffs to dominate possession. The game was put out of reach when attackman TJ O’Connell scored late in the fourth.

Senior Gold

Gold 9, Orange 2: U15 Senior Gold team beat Danbury Senior Orange on Wednesday night at Broadview M.S. Newtown got off to a slow start, leading by only one goal at the end of the first quarter. They found their feet in the second quarter and scored another four goals, while allowing Danbury to score only one more by the half. Charlie Fletcher, Nick Genovese and Christian Morlock led the ground ball attack with four each. The strong defensive play of Gordon Walsh and Nick Samuelson, along with fantastic saves by goaltenders Owen Gray and Jeremy Salaris kept Danbury from hitting the net the rest of the game. Newtown was able to score three more goals the second half. Newtown was led by Colin Smalkais and Matt Meyers who came up with three goals each. Kris Whelan, Andrew Svanda and Devin Luzietti scored one a piece.

Gold 12, New Milford Senior Silver 3: Two nights later the boys hosted their first home game at Treadwell Park against New Milford Senior Silver. Newtown came out strong scoring four goals in the first quarter and attaining one more before the half. They had another high scoring third quarter adding five goals with another two in the fourth, securing the win. Jared Pearson led the goal scoring with four, followed by Kris Whelan with three, Nick Genovese and Matt Meyers with two each, and Mark Urso, one. Attackmen Josh Headen, Payton Manning, and David Anderson along with Midfielders Steven Faxlanger, James Accousti, Curtis Williamson, and Shawn McCarthy helped guide the team to victory. Charlie Fletcher added four ground balls to his team leading total and Kris Whelan, Andrew Svanda, and Devin Luzietti assisted with three ground balls each. Goalie Jeremy Salaris stopped 11 shots keeping New Milford’s goals to a minimum.

Gold 13, Norwalk Senior White 1: Saturday afternoon’s game against Norwalk Senior White at Brian McMahon H.S. brought about another win for U15 Newtown Gold. Norwalk was the first team to score just minutes into the game, and at the end of the first quarter the score was tied 1-1. Newtown ran away with it after that, and Norwalk’s one goal was all they could get past goaltenders Jeremy Salaris and Owen Gray for the remainder of the game. The impenetrable defense of Gordon Walsh, Andrew Svanda and Christian Morlock kept Norwalk from reaching the net. Defenseman Andrew Svanda scored one goal and strong offensive play was achieved by midfielders with one goal each Colin Smalkais, Mark Urso and James Carney (one assist). Matt Meyers (two goals) and Kris Whelan (three goals and one assist) dominated at attack. Midfielder Jared Pearson helped close out the game with four goals and three assists.

Guilford Senior A 9, Gold 5: For their fourth game in five days, the U15 Newtown Gold boys team traveled to Guilford H.S. on Sunday to try to add another win. The boys played a tough game against Guilford Senior A and fought hard. Great goaltending by Owen Gray and Jeremy Salaris, along with strong defensive play by Andrew Svanda, and Charlie Fletcher kept the game within one at the half. Guilford pulled ahead adding three goals in the third quarter and the points scored by Jared Pearson (four goals) and Kris Whelan (one goal and one assist) just were not enough to pull out a fourth win for the week.

Senior Blue

Newtown Senior Blue 8, Relax Senior Gold 4: Newtown put in a great effort and topped Relax Gold bringing its record to 2-1. The Newtown offense was strong with 13 shots on goal and connecting with the back of the net eight times. Devin Luzetti led the way with 3 goals, David Anderson had 2, and Mark Urso, Shawn McCarthy and Max Weber each added 1. Urso had a strong game with his 1 goal, 1 assist and leading the team by scooping 6 ground balls.  Jake Lapp played aggressively and also picked up 3 ground balls. Defensively Newtown was strong with 13 saves in goal shared between Owen Gray (7 saves) and Jeremy Salaris (6).
