The competitors faced each other across tables set up at Newtown High School after school on Thursday, May 3, for one of the NHS Chess Clubâs annual open chess tournaments.
As NHS Chess Club advisor Steve Malary pointed out as the tournament was about to begin, this yearâs lineup had more players than last yearâs.
NHS Chess Club President and senior Matt Pruner said his hopes before the tournament began included not losing. He also advised others to play chess, because, âitâs good.â
Before the 12 competitors faced off in 20-minute controlled games, Dr Malary told the players to respect the rules of the game.
Clocks were set next to each chess board, and sheets were provided for players to keep score. Prizes for the dayâs tournaments included cash prizes and free lunches provided by the schoolâs culinary department. Dr Malary said the top female player, the top freshmen competitor, and the dayâs champion would received prizes.
The tournament was open to the entire school community, according to Dr Malary, and one faculty member signed up for the challenge.
After four rounds, Kai Hedin emerged with a perfect of 4 to 0 score and was alone in first place.
âHannah Bartlett, Noelle Veillette, Erica Bloomberg, and Catherine McHugh tied for the top score among the girls in the tournament,â Dr Malary reported. âDavid Pierce and Zach Weiland split the honor for having the highest score among the freshman and tied for second overall.â
