NHS Sluggers Drop Two, Win One

Newtown High School’s baseball team fell to Pomperaug of Southbury 7-4 at Fairfield Hills on May 2, defeated host New Fairfield 6-4 two days later, then dropped a 5-3 decision at Bunnell of Stratford on Monday to carry a 10-5 record into Wednesday’s scheduled home game with Masuk of Monroe (after The Bee sports section went to press).

In the setback to Pomperaug, Andy Kelley drove in two runs, and Mike Davis and Evan Noonan each had runs batted in.

Justin DeVellis had two of the team’s five hits.

Newtown bounced back with a six-run second inning against New Fairfield. The Nighthawks again only had five hits, but made the most of them — along with five walks — en route to the victory. DeVellis and Kyle Wilcox both knocked in two runs, and Rich Sandler and Pat Mullins both plated Hawks. Nighthawk pitchers Mike Davis and Josh Hull combined for pitching duties and allowed ten hits and three earned runs between them.

The Nighthawks fell to Bunnell despite jumping out to a 2-0 first-inning lead. The Bulldogs mustered only four hits but worked six walks on their way to the win.

Following the Masuk game, Newtown is scheduled to host Immaculate of Danbury on Friday, May 11, at 6 pm at Fairfield Hills. The South-West Conference foes met earlier this spring and NHS came out on top 10-1. Newtown will host Stratford on May 14 before concluding the regular season with a pair of road games, May 16 at New Milford and May 17 at Pomperaug.
