NICE Programs Planned AT NHS
An additional movie to finalize the Newtown International Center for Education (NICE) Japanese Film Festival has been set for Wednesday, May 23, with a showing of Ponyo. The screening is one of two upcoming programs being hosted by the group.
After connecting with the NICE Japan Project Team, NHS junior Eric Song established the Japanese Film Festival. Since December, a series of Japanese films have been shown at NHS free for community members. Eric compiled the list of movies to show after consulting with his father, Allan Song. The movies, Eric explained in December, were set to be shown in a sequence that would document Japanâs history.
The success of the of the film series, according to a release from NICE, Ponyo was slated as an additional final film.
Ponyo is an anime movie released by Disney and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. According to NICE, the movie is a Japanese spin on The Little Mermaid. Ponyo will be shown for free in the NHS Lecture Hall on Wednesday, May 23, from 6 to 8 pm, and refreshments will be available.
An âIntroduction to Japanâ workshop will be offered on Thursday, May 24, from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm, in the NHS cafetorium. The event is also free and open to the public.
Shima Ayaka, a graduate student at the University of Bridgeport, is set to cover origami, pop culture, and conversational introductions during the workshop.
