When A Community Unites
When A Community Unites
To the Editor:
Too often news critical of the economy, of the state of education locally and beyond, and of scholastic athletics dominates the media landscape. During times of need, the people of this community still unite together to make a difference. The support of Newtown in the premature birth of my son Ryan, at only 26 weeks, shows how much good people can do in the face of adversity. I would like to thank Newtown for their support of both my family and of the March of Dimes. There are simply too many people to thank each of you individually, so I felt this was the best way. That said, there were a few who went above and beyond.
I would like to thank the NHS girlsâ lacrosse team and the NHS baseball team for sponsoring a game in honor of Ryan to benefit the March of Dimes, specifically coaches Maura Fletcher and Matt Memoli, respectively. Both teams jumped at the opportunity to get involved. These events serve as an example of all the good that the NHS athletic department does for the community. These student-athletes and coaches consistently go above and beyond to meet challenges beyond their day-to-day competitions.
The NHS boysâ soccer team, under my colleague and friend Brian Neumeyer, and the girlsâ soccer team, of which I am the coach, along with the help of NYA, sponsored a youth camp during our April break that helped raise money for my family to help defray some of the costs associated with Ryanâs birth. The players and their parents continue to impress me with their generosity and concern for others. I am blessed to coach such an incredible group of young women. Keep up the good work!
I would also like to thank the Newtown High School staff (where I teach English and journalism) and students as well. You helped make an extremely emotional time a bit easier to handle. Besides your willingness to help in a variety of ways, I was so moved by the kind words I heard from all you daily.
Finally, my family and I would like to thank all of you who did get involved in the aforementioned events by simply showing up and donating time, money, and support. Besides the miracle of my sonâs birth, who today is a healthy 10-pound boy, this event showed me that I work in the right community, with the right people. Best wishes to all of you!
Sincerely,
Marc Kenney
