Newtown Youth Services Helps Seniors Around The House
By Laurie Borst
Saturday, April 29, was Newtown Youth Servicesâ Annual Independent Living Day. Independent Living Day connects youth and adult volunteers with seniors in town who could use some help around their homes. More than 80 volunteers helped 39 senior citizens with spring cleanup.
The teams helped with any chores that were needed from raking and planting to installing screens to cleaning closets to washing and setting up patio furniture.
Many of the students and seniors have formed friendships with the students visiting and helping their friends throughout the year.
Independent Living Day began seven years ago with involvement from AARP. After the first year, however, AARP dropped out, but NYS continued the program. Ten or 12 seniors were helped that first year.
