U6

Tigers 3, Fighting Irish 3: For the Tigers, Peri Meeker, Elena Sughrue, and Kyra Masone all scored goals. Lauren Milligan deflected several shots. Emily Lash and Amanda Stowe played outstanding on both sides of the ball. For the Fighting Irish, Ella Hage led the attack with a hat-trick. Sienna Harper was a force to be reckoned with, making several good offensive runs. Olivia Nikolis played a strong defensive game and Sarah Bertsche was outstanding on both sides of the ball.

U8

Wildcats 4, Lightning 0: The Wildcats and Lightning played a well balanced and exciting match that was scoreless in the first half, with both sides demonstrating strong ball control and passing skills. The Wildcats attack was led by Isabella Butler (1 goal), Hannah Groonell (2 goals), and Kaley Meisenheimer (1 goal, 1 assist). Colleen Phaneuf demonstrated strong leadership while also assisting on the opening goal. The Wildcats stingy defense was led by the solid play of Erin Phaneuf and Molly Sullivan. For the Lightening, Cameron Powers played an overall outstanding game on the offensive side of the pitch moving the ball well around the opposing defenders. Sophia Powers also did a great job of overall ball control exhibiting her excellent passing skills throughout the contest. On the defensive unit, Carlie Smith played outstanding goal, deflecting multiple shots and moving the ball back to the Lightning offensive unit in quick time. Eileen McClearly and Ellie Moxham supported the defensive cause very well by keeping the ball to the outside on multiple attacks by the opposition.

U10

Smurfs 3, Twisters 0: Smurfs forward Angela Vodola scored one goal, and “VV”, Veronica Vodola added two, while Claire DuBois dished out two assists to notch the second win of the season. Jenna Ehnot’s solid defense, Erin Walsh’s super midfield play and by Alyssa Ross and Carolina Stubbs preserved the shutout. For the Twisters, Ally Toth and Colby Troy both played great defense, while Heidi Poarch, Emma Stierle, and Vanessa Tucker kept up the offensive pressure. Janyce Toth was solid in goal, and Lindsey Gallagher and Elizabeth Salley were tireless at midfield.

Newtown Sparks 6, Ridgefield Kicks 1: The Newtown Sparks came out strong with a penalty kick awarded to Sarah Widmann in the first 45 seconds of play. Sarah’s goal led the team to a 6-1 win over the Ridgefield Kicks. Subsequent Sparks goals were scored by Gabrielle Reisert, Kristen Cirone, Carly Swierbut, Emily Celentano. and Nathalie Schickendantz. The Sparks defense in the goal was led by Swierbut and Jackie Seras. Lauran Adams played a strong game in midfield and defensive backs Madi Ziperstein, Lindsay Merrifield and Seras kept Ridgefield at bay.

Newtown Sparks 2, Wilton White 2: The Newtown Sparks stole victory from Wilton with 2 goals at the end of the second half to tie the game 2-2. The Sparks strong defensive efforts in the second half led by Madi Ziperstein and Lindsay Merrifield held Wilton back, giving the Newtown offense time to score. The Sparks’ Carly Swierbut and Kristen Cirone scored the late game goals. Swierbut defended the Sparks goal in the first half with Jackie Seras providing stellar defense in the goal in the second. Other standout performances in offense were seen in Sarah Widmann, Izzy Mawdsley, and Nathalie Schickendantz.

Golden Eagles 7, Funky Socks 2: There was plenty to cheer on the Eagles side of the field as Kayleign Nolan celebrated her birthday with her first career goal! Lauryn Ankers, after having a perfect half as goalie, came back in the second half to net her first goal as well. The Eagles started off strong as Simone Paradis netted two goals to spot the Golden Ones to an early lead. Zoe Freedman also was able to hit the back of the net twice as well as having some great assists. Emma Curtis, as the top Golden scorer just couldn’t be left out and left footed a shot in from the top of the box. Making her Golden Eagle debut, Sonia Ahmaripour found her wings in the midfield as Nicole Keeping protected the nest well. It was a tough game but team Funky Socks worked together tirelessly. Being down a few goals early on, the Funky Socks came back to score two goals by Marit Lyon and Bella Manfredi. Camryn Findley demonstrated incredible ball control zigzagging across the field seamlessly.

Brookfield 1, Dynamites 0: Newtown came up short despite spending the majority of the game on the Brookfield end of the field. The game’s only goal came on a breakaway. Some star goalkeeping by the Brookfield squad kept the constant barrage of hits by Rebecca Gavel, Lauren Carrino, Jenna Lavelle, and Audrey Benson in the first half from finding their way into the net. In the second half, Newtown keeper Keeley Kortze had multiple saves to keep the game close. Shots were made by Lu Hage, Katie Sailer, and Jenna Lavelle with strong offensive pressure by Brooke Antous, Ali Kelleher, and Lauren Adams, while Madi Ziperstein and Kristen Cirone helped out on defense.

Dynamites 4, Trumbull 2: The entire Newtown squad kept the pressure on the Trumbull keeper with the first goal coming from Brooke Antous with an assist by Jenna Lavelle. Rebecca Gavel had a shot on goal. Alison Kelleher had multiple saves in goal for the Dynamites. Trumbull’s first goal came in the second half on a direct penalty kick, but Newtown came back quickly when Keeley Kortze was able to tap in a bobbled ball. Lauren Carrino then got the ball to Brooke Antous to bring the score to 3-1. Strong defense by Lu Hage and Lauren Carrino kept the Trumbull squad scrambling. Trumbull came back fighting, netting one more, and keeper Audrey Benson had multiple saves in the goal to keep the Dynamites in front. Katie Sailer sealed the win with a breakaway just before time expired.

American Eagles 5, Dynamite 0: For the American Eagles, the offense did a great job passing and moving the ball up and down the pitch. Beth Mattolla and Grace Capeci each netted a pair of goals, while Hana Rosenthal supported Kathy Hyeon on a nice assist play for the final score. Liza Gentraub also played well in the forward slot. On the defensive side of the ball, Izzy Kaiser played a nice half in goal, deflecting multiple attacks on net, while Sarah Simenson, Grace Sholtes and Caroline Viselli played excellent overall defense. The Dynamite’s Alexis Fortugno, Victoria Keayes, and Jenna Gonski played well. Brianna Castellano and Sage Karp were both solid sharing goal duties.

U11

Newtown Breeze 7, Westport 1: Marcella Daily got Newtown off to a quick start in the match against Westport, scoring the first of her three goals within minutes of kick-off. Jacklin Gouveia kept the offense going, adding two consecutive goals of her own. Newtown relied on Sarah Houle and Cassidy Kortze to control the midfield and keep the offensive pressure on Westport. Ashley Santore, Colleen McCarthy, and Erin Tressler anchored the defense to keep Westport to one goal during the first half of play. Samantha Crespo ignited the Newtown offense in the second half, scoring two quick goals for Newtown behind the offensive efforts of Maggie Beardsley, Natalie Kelchner and Savannah Mather. Lauren King was key for Newtown at both ends of the field, stopping several Westport offensive plays and keeping them scoreless in the second half of play. Colleen McCarthy and Natalie Kelchner combined in goal for the win.

 

U12

Newtown Dynamite 1, Ridgefield 1: The Newtown Dynamite traveled to Ridgefield on a beautiful Mother’s Day. The game was an offensive battle in the first half with net minder Sophia Albano coming up with big saves. Also of note was the strong defense of Katie Elkins and Amanda Albanesi. Ridgefield scored on a blast from outside the box at the midpoint of the half. Newtown finally scored on a big shot on goal by Chloe Rogalin that ricocheted off a Ridgefield player and into the net. Newtown continued the offensive pressure as Ashling Sugarman hit the post. In the second half, the Dynamite came out strong. With the determined play of Taylor Pare, Lauren Cirone, Mallory Lobuglio, and Cassidy Keller Newtown kept up the offensive pressure. In the closing minutes of the game Newtown’s strong defense led by Biranna Lutz, Maya Neuhoff, and Mia Katsuleres held off the Ridgefield attack and preserved the tie against a strong Ridgefield team.

Newtown Thunder 1, Glastonbury 0: It took a while, but the Thunder eventually outlasted Glastonbury in the second OT period for a Mother’s Day victory in the first State Cup game of the season. Forwards Hailey Conrad, Jess Maturo, Stef Carr, and Emily Neave, played well and accurate passing of middies Julia Sughrue, Ali Manfredi, Claire Beiter, and Kendra Dunnigan helped Newtown control the play. The rare advance into Newtown territory was quickly turned back by the tenacious defense, led by Lauren Beier, Meghan Kelleher, Olivia Caplan, and Emily Montoya. Two minutes into the second OT, Dunnigan lofted a perfect cross over the goalie and Maturo took it on the short hop and blasted the go-ahead goal into the upper left corner of the net. Meghan Doyle made some key saves and Beier had several long clearing kicks that helped run out the clock.

U14

Chaos 2, Rockets 1: Chaos pulled off the victory with late goals by Chrissy Moore and Sierra Mather in the second half. Hannah Grant and Jesse Sailer provided the assists. Margot Elkins and Kayla DiSibio anchored the defensive with Keira Veillette providing strong midfield play.

Oompah Loompas 1, Twisters 0: For the Oompah Loompas Haley Ryan scored. Sara Lampel, Joanelle Tran, and Erika Teetsel provided strong midfield play moving the ball into position for scoring opportunities. Briana Baranoski played excellent defense and goalkeeper Rachel Jacuzzi made several key saves in the final minutes to save the victory. For the Twisters, Samantha Olah and Lindsey Gallagher demonstrated persistent midfield play and solid defense was provided by Jenna Hansen and Laura Malin. Taylor Clomiro was strong in her role as goalkeeper.

Boys

U8

Team Nine 3, Team Ten 3 (Warriors vs Madmen): In a back and forth game of fast offensive attacks and stingy defensive play the Warriors and Madmen ended the game Sunday locked in a 3-3 tie. The Warriors tied the game with a minute to go on a quick left footed strike from Charlie Graven. In the second quarter both Devin OConnell and Johnathan Radatovich put the ball in the net for the Warriors while Collin Hoffman anchored the defense with solid play in the middle. Daniel DeBartolomeo, William Tainter-Gilbert and Tucker Dupuy led the Madmen’s defensive effort playing with great hustle and determination. Marlin Medina played well in the goal. On the offensive side, Johnathan Taylor knocked in two goals with strong kicks and Riley Ward added another on a spectacular move up the sideline past three opponents and into the goal.

Vipers 2, Nighthawks 1: In a game that literally went done to the last second the Nighthawks and Vipers played a thrilling game. Bryce Benson of the Vipers scored a last second goal to lift the Vipers to the win. The Nighthawks played a great all around game on Sunday. Duncan O’Leary had the lone goal for the Nighthawks on a long breakaway weaving thru four Viper defenders. Jack Peterson, Colin Zhang and Jake Anthony led the Nighthawk offense while Richard Qi, Andrew Bazuro and Max Cruwys-Hayes were outstanding on defense, hustling all game. For the Vipers, Fritz Maurath and Jake Pare moved the ball well on offense and David Ormsbee and Ryder Palumbo fought hard to defend the Vipers goal. Daniel Delia had multiple saves in goal while Chase Yeaton joined Bryce Benson in the scoring column.

U10

Trumbull United 5, Vipers 2: The Vipers suffered their second loss of the season in a battle on very tall grass. Although seemingly equal teams, the Vipers had several unlucky moments. Dylan Sock booted a penalty kick early in the half. Moments later the Vipers made an own goal tying up the board. On a corner kick, Sock Sean Arnold was able to find the back of the net. United came out of the gate strong in the second half, repeating the Vipers first by scoring on a PK and then on a corner. Midis Jack McDermott, Jackson Dooley and Declan Sughrue served up multiple scoring opportunities to the offense collectively resulting in 14 sure shots on goal only to be shut down by the tough United defense and goal tending. CJ Trivers in game one of a double header (also playing up as the keeper for the U11 Netrippers) displayed his superior keeping abilities with 10 saves.

U11

State Cup

Brookfield 1, Newtown 0: Goalie MVP CJ Trivers held court with stealthlike reflexes, controlling the State Cup game against powerhouse Brookfield in a fight to the end. Extreme defensive maneuvers from Hunter Procaccini, Silas Decker, Ryan Brello, and James Barden held an aggressive Brookfield to just 1. Evan Eggleston worked both ends of the pitch, protecting Goalie Trivers with everything possible. Aiden Ford, Nick Harper, Josh Harper, Grant Larson, and Brendan O’Hara had multiple plays past a surprised Brookfield, with mighty Matt Gerbo proving fearless in attempts to put one through the net.

Darien 4, Newtown 3: The classy Net Rippers failed to win a Mother’s Day gimme against a creative and continuously censored Darien. Grant Larson, Aiden Ford and James Barden attacked the ball with precision and solidly controlled the first half. Silas Decker, Ryan Brello, and Hunter Procaccini outsmarted and outplayed Darien, with moves by Josh Harper and Nick Harper, with Matt Gerbo and Mark Hall leaving it all on the field. Evan Eggleston nailed an indirect penalty shot, and Brendan O’Hara ne’er missed a cross-bar bending bullet, but nailed one free and clear on a penalty. Josh Harper put one through of his own, but penalty kicks against the best goalie in Newtown, CJ Trivers, put Newtown down 4-3.

U13

First Round State Cup

Strikers 4, Hebron AHM United 2: Opening goal by James Carney. Second goal by Omar Rodriguez on pass from Albert Dean. The game was even 2-2 at halftime. Goal by Dean off pass from Rodriguez made it 3-2. Final goal by Cole Rogalin on free kick. Zachary Laros was strong in goal.

League play

Strikers 4, Greenwich 2: Opening goal by Omar Rodriguez off pass from Alex Gerbo. Liam McNichols and Zachary Laros strong in first half. Goal by Rodriguez with 30 seconds left in half to take the lead. Goal by Albert Dean. Chris Rovelli and James Carney were standouts in second half. Victory puts Strikers at 2-1-1 in league play.

U14

Predators 4, A-Team 3: For the Predators, Kevin Arther, David Csordas, Thomas Gavel, and Nathan Horvath each scored a goal to lead a balanced offense. Henry Lyons played great in goal to secure the win. For the A-Team, Sawyer Conrad scored 2 goals and Tommy Shaker scored a goal to lead their offense to make the game a great offensive battle. Charles Soto played great on defense while Patrick Olah did a tremendous job in goal blocking many shots.

A-Team 6, The Daze 2: Scoring for the A-Team were Sawyer Conrad with two goals and one goal each from Dillon Palumbo, Tommy Shaker, Kaustav Mitra and Tim Vander Have. Zach Demeglio played well in his goalie debut. Kieran Lynch, Maks Koziol and Casper DeWit controlled the midfield. Charlie Soto played a beautiful defensive game. The Daze were led by the scoring of Elliot Bennet and Erik Vonschleusinger. Akash Ahuja played a strong wing, while Andrei Kalinowski shined on defense.
