To the Editor:

I want to thank the Newtown state delegation for bringing forward Senate Bill 1562, providing for a parcel on Commerce Road to be used for Open Space/Recreation, replacing the original designation as Economic Development.

A hearing was held on this bill by the state Government Oversight Committee on May 5. Prior to that, an impressive 50+ written testimonies had been received in support of the bill, demonstrating the public’s understanding of the value of natural areas in general, and specifically this one which offers a butterfly meadow, protection of an aquifer and a Class 1 trout stream, extensive hiking trails connected to adjacent parcels, and the opportunity to connect with nature for area residents of all ages.

Senator Tony Hwang opened the hearing with convincing arguments for the change in designation, citing the value of this particular parcel and stating that the town has an obligation for ecological preservation for future generations. Representative Mitch Bolinsky agreed and added that in reviewing the extensive paperwork he had found a technical problem, which fortunately can be corrected so as not to delay an upcoming vote.

Having spent many hours walking this site and the adjacent parcels, I am so appreciative of this effort to finally move forward towards preservation without the possibility of development. Many thanks to our town representatives and to all those residents who took the time to support this unique and valuable property.
