CHINESE WORKS OF ART AT ROGER KEVERNE JUNE 14 w/1 cut
Avv/gs set 5-16 #700135
LONDON â Roger Keverne will present his summer exhibition of fine and rare Chinese works of art and ceramics opening Thursday, June 14, 16 Clifford Street.
The exhibition includes Chinese art ranging from Neolithic jades of the third millennium BC to glass paintings of the late Eighteenth Century, including works of art from the Imperial dynasties.
Highlights include two contrasting archaic bronze ewers (he): a very rare late Western Zhou (1027â771 BC) example, with a disc-like body, echoing a wood container and a bird-form cover; and a mid spring and autumn period (770â476 BC) example, with a curved handle terminating in a striking dragonâs head, that takes itS inspiration from ceramic forms.
Three Jiajing (1522â66) mark and period porcelains are highlights among the ceramics: a rare green and yellow saucer dish incised with dragons; a jar painted with auspicious decoration pertinent to the Daoist beliefs of the Jiajing Emperor; and a robust octagonal box and cover with vivid inky blue painting of birds and flowers.
Contrasting with these Ming ceramics is a famille rose two-handled cup of the Eighteenth Century, painted with delicate landscape scenes, and a translucent blue with Yongzheng (1723â35) mark and period saucer with striking geometric decoration.
Early wares are well represented by a Northern Qi (550â557) glazed pottery lamp in the form of a Central Asian or Indian muscular squatting male figure, and a northern blackware pillow in the form of a pavilion dating to the Jin dynasty (1115â1234).
Highlights among lacquers of the Qianlong period include a carved red lacquer vase and stand, decorated with formal motifs, that has close parallels in the Palace Museums in Beijing and Taipei; a double ingot shaped box with a gilt painted interior; and an unusual lobed box with a wrythen floral pattern.
