Guests Ruined Good Intentions

To the Editor:

It is well understood why squirrels keep getting into bird feeders despite our best efforts. Though we may spend a few minutes to several hours trying to outsmart them, it is the squirrel’s life’s work. Unfortunately, the same trait applies to many Newtown teenagers when it comes to alcohol.

Tom and Lisa Gissen were outsmarted but they were neither negligent nor complacent in sponsoring their son’s post-prom party. They do not deserve legal action against them nor do they deserve the judgment of those who think it could never happen to them.

To those who contributed in any way to bringing down the event, please learn from it that your actions do have consequences beyond yourself. Many people were hurt by your choices and Newtown lost a dedicated and knowledgeable public servant. What was broken can’t be fixed but that does not mean these events can’t have positive results. This is an opportunity for growth. However, that can only be realized if judgment is set aside and open and honest conversations are the result.

Sincerely,

Susan and Paul Mayer
