Talking Points
To the Editor:
First, we would like to make it perfectly clear that we do not support underage drinking, nor do we support adults who host parties where minors are knowingly served alcohol. That having been said, we are disappointed by the coverage in The Newtown Bee regarding the post-prom night party held at the home of Tom and Lisa Gissen. Why is it that we had to learn several important details from the Danbury News-Times? According to that story, Mr and Mrs Gissen took several measures to ensure there would be no alcohol at the party. Thatâs why they took the keys away from the attendees â so they couldnât leave and bring back alcohol. Why didnât The Bee explain that a neighbor brought the keg through the woods on an ATV unbeknownst to the Gissens? Why didnât The Bee tell about the fliers Teddy Gissen distributed stating this was an alcohol- and drug-free party? Why didnât The Bee point out that the Gissens even locked up their own liquor to be sure it didnât get into the hands of the partygoers? They even turned away a student who apparently had been drinking prior to arriving at the party. We are taken aback by the Beeâs failure to report some of the most important details of this story. Even the Editorial Ink Drops seemed slanted.
We are also upset by the comments of Joan Piscitelli and Kathy Fetchick. Where did Ms Piscitelli and Ms Fetchick get their information from and why would they make such inaccurate and damaging statements? It is ridiculous to think that a man who has spent countless hours serving this community and our school system would actually host an underage drinking party.
Our hearts go out to the Gissens, parents who took every precaution to provide an alcohol-free party and are now facing a mountain of legal bills and public persecution. We stand in full support of the Gissens and think they have become victims of a hysterical self-righteous society that has lost all sense of reason.
