Nine NHS Students To Participate In

National Merit Scholarship Program

One Saturday morning last October, juniors from Newtown High School sat down to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Nine of those students scores qualified them to enter the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Through their performances, these students have proved their outstanding academic potential and will be referred to two US colleges or universities in which they are interested. This College Plans Reporting Services (CPRS) is offered to encourage college officials to communicate directly with these scholastically capable students about educational opportunities that may be available to them.

The nine NHS students are Tyler Adams, Blake Bell, Stephen Dworkin, Allison Jagoe, Sarah Peck, Jordan Reed, Rebecca Reed, Rachel Rockwell, and Tanner Schmidt.

Some 1.4 million students took the PSAT last fall. Of that group, 50,000 qualified for the CPRS program. About 16,000 of the qualifiers will be named National Merit Program Semifinalists, representing the top scorers in each state, and approximately 34,000 other high scorers will be commended for their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Semifinalists and Commended Students in the 2008 program will learn of their standing in September. Semifinalists will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards to be offered in 2008.
