Outstanding Youth Awards

Nominations for Outstanding Youth are available at NYS, the schools, churches, and the Booth Library. This award ceremony will be held Thursday, May 24, 4 pm, at the Booth Library.

Nominees will be judged on outstanding qualities in the following categories: Service to Others, Babysitting, Friend, Sister/Brother or any other outstanding quality. It is Newtown Youth Services’ pleasure to honor Newtown youth for the everyday, wonderful things that they do.

Youth Programs

20th Annual Youth Talent Show is Friday, May 18, 7 pm, Reed Intermediate School. Tickets are $5 for adults (13 and older) and $3 for children (12 and under). Tickets are available at NYS and will be available at the door.

Cullens Nature Camp Would you like to learn more about insects, frogs, the weather and water, plants and other fun outdoor activities? Like to work on nature crafts and keep a journal? You will have two opportunities to learn these and so many more interesting things at the Cullens Nature Camp on Taunton Lake Road. The camp will be offered two different weeks: the week of June 25 and the week of July 9. Students who have finished grades K through 2 will meet from 9 to 11 am and those who have finished grades 3 through 5 will meet from 11:30 to 1:30 pm. Fee for the camp is $75. This is a very popular camp and space is limited. To pre-register for the Nature Camp, call NYS at 270-4335.

HSYAB meeting will be Monday, May 21, 2 pm, in the high school cafeteria.

Sibshops for children with a special needs sibling meets Monday, May 21, from 5 to 6 pm.

Children of Divorce meets on Monday, May 21, from 6 to 7 pm.

Support Groups

Caregivers/Grandparents’ Group — The Second Time Around: Raising Your Children’s Children is an ongoing support program that meets Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 pm. There is no fee.

Hope and Support meets Mondays, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Parents or caregivers with questions or concerns about a child’s possible or confirmed substance use or abuse are welcome to attend this group. The Hope Group will not meet on school holidays, school breaks, or snow days.

NAMI Support Group for relatives and caregivers of the mentally ill. Join in a confidential and supportive setting to discuss and share information, resources, and fellowship twice a month. The group meets on the first and third Monday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 at NYS. For further information, contact Laura Miller Kurtz, 313-0412.
