Duck Race Is Back Memorial Day Weekend

The 12th Annual Newtown Lions Club Great Pootatuck Duck Race will be offered in Sandy Hook Center on Saturday, May 26.

Kids (of all ages) from all over the greater Danbury area will see approximately 4,000 rubber ducks dumped into the Pootatuck River. The build-up begins at 10 am and continues throughout the day until the ducks enter the water from the bridge in Sandy Hook at 2:30 pm. Everyone who has purchased a duck race ticket ($5 each) will be hoping that one of the first 20 ducks that cross the finish line has a number that corresponds to the number on their ticket.

This year’s top prizes are a $2,000 check; a weekend getaway (hotel, dinner and theater tickets, valued at $600); dinner for six at Stone River Grille (wine, appetizer, entrees and dessert, valued at $450); and fourth prize, Sony PlayStation 3 (320GB, $319).

Gift certificates and prizes from local businesses will also be given out to the next 16 prize winners.

Local organizations will have booths set up in the park area at 5 Glen Road, while performers — from a magician and dancers to karate students and more — will perform on the stage at the park. Duck Race Chairman Bob Schmidt will also return to emcee the day.

There will be a moon bounce and giant slide for the kids.

In addition to all this, the 5K Donut Dash — an annual event that doubles as a fundraiser for Newtown Youth & Family Services — has also been scheduled for Saturday morning. Runners will begin from and return to the same park where the Duck Race is centered. That event begins at 9 am; details are available by calling Mike Porco, Jr, at 203-733-9332.

The Lions Club of Newtown will also be collecting used, outdated, and worn out eye glasses. These glasses will be dispersed worldwide to aid in attempting to eliminate eye problems for children and adults. Call Stan Wyslick (203-426-5645) for further information.

Newtown Lions Club members continue to sell Duck Race tickets on the weekends, outside businesses around town.

In addition, tickets may also be obtained at the following Newtown business establishments: Bagel Delight, Berkshire Motors, Booth Library, Cork-N Barrel, demitasse, Dodgingtown Liquor Store, Fun Kuts, Hawleyville Liquor Store, Shear Image, Superior Cleaners, Queen Street Cleaners, Sandy Hook Deli & Catering, Sandy Hook Diner, Sandy Hook Hair Company, Sandy Hook Liquor Store, Stop & Save Liquors, Village Barber Shop, World Of Wine & Spirits, Yankee Discount Liquor Store, Your Healthy Pet, and The Toy Tree.

Any remaining tickets will be sold on Duck Race Day at the event.
