Seniors

Senior Gold Sweeps at Longmeadow Jamboree: Senior Gold 8, Agawam, Mass 0; Senior Gold 8, Belchertown, Mass 2; Senior Gold 11, Longmeadow, Mass 4; Senior Gold 9, Tantasqua, Mass 3. On Saturday the Senior and Junior girls lacrosse teams participated in the Longmeadow, Mass., Lacrosse Jamboree. More than 40 teams from Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York came together to compete on this beautiful afternoon. The Senior Gold team is really came together to sweep the competition going 4-0 on the day. The team was led by strong goaltending by Bridget Walsh, who stopped an incredible 18 of 27 shots on the day, and a very strong defense led by Dori Farley, Celia Gold, Meg Kelleher, Katie Cappelli and Anna Buzzanca, which limited the opponents opportunities. The midfield was controlled all day by Brianna Sclafani, Julia Wiberg, Brittany Meisenheimer, Nicole Zaccaro, Jess Maturo and Lauren Zimmerman. The attack was relentless, assisting and scoring from all angles and was led by Maddy Bridges, Meghan Doyle, Quinn Karp and Lindsay Hoyt.

Senior Gold 8, New Milford Silver 5: In a rematch, New Milford sought to avenge a previous loss to the Senior Gold team but Bridget Walsh and Brittany Meisenheimer put an end to that from the outset. Walsh was spectacular in the pipes making great save after great save while Meisenheimer assigned to shut down New Milford’s strongest player did just that by hustling all of over the field and leading the team in ground ball controls to boot. Maddy Bridges led the team in assists and Brianna Sclafani and Nicole Zaccaro led the team in draw controls. The offense was led by Bridges, Christina Caporale, Sclafani, Zaccaro, Julia Wiberg and Jess Maturo.

Juniors

Junior Blue at Longmeadow, Mass., Jamboree. On Saturday, under a sapphire sky, the Junior Blue Girls fought through four tournament games resulting in a split decision of wins and losses at the Tournament in Longmeadow. Game 3 was marked with a dramatic come-from-behind rally on the way to victory, 8-6. Standout defender Morgan Sclafani stopped all comers to facilitate the victory, with Jenna Lavelle powering the offense with 4 goals and hustle to spare. The team once again showed overall improvement and left it all on the field.

Litchfield U13 8, Junior Blue 7: On Sunday, in the scorching heat of Newtown’s Tilson turf, the Junior Girls Blue team took on the Litchfield U13 team and lost a hard-fought battle 8-7. Like warriors fighting in battle, they defended their turf and came from behind several times. Goalies Marissa Lametto and Courtney Carroll were spectacular in the cage battling fierce competitors and the blistering heat. Jenna Lavelle and Lina Stubbs proved their defensive prowess while Alison Kelleher, Keeley Kortze and Kiera Sughrue controlled the midfield and powered the attack. Another brilliant game by the Junior Blue, but came up just shy of victory.

Junior Gold Sweeps Longmeadow. The Golden Girls faced stiff competition, but swept their foes by exhibiting the great team defense and spectacular goal tending that has become their trademark. Alex Futterman and Liz Hodge split the goaltending duties and allowed only 8 goals in four games. Each girl made spectacular saves throughout the day and contributed to the transition offense with precision clearing passes. The defensive effort was relentless and was led by Lexi Leidlein, Lauren Carrino, Julia Haskins, Cassidy Kortze and Kira Smith. The girls also played unselfishly in the offensive end and applied continuous pressure to the opposition’s defense. Game summaries are as follows:

Jr Gold 8, Wilberham 1: Riley Mulligan and Lauren Carrino each scooped four ground balls. Mulligan and Dylan Zahansky each netted 2 goals. Julia Haskins and Rachel Tomasino had two assists apiece, and Hanna Rosenthal and Dani Samson both found the back of the net. Lu Hage contributed with a goal, an assist and an interception.

Jr Gold 9, Agawam MA 2: In what proved to be the most physical game of the day, the Golden Girls prevailed on will and determination. Mulligan scored 3 goals and had three assists. Carrino netted 2 goals and picked up four ground balls. Zahansky netted 3 goals, Lexi Leidlein picked up three ground balls and Katie McCabe forced a turnover, secured possession and scored an unassisted goal.

Jr Gold 8, Longmeadow Gray 5: Cassidy Kortze picked up four ground balls, scored 2 goals and assisted on another. Rachel Tomasino and Hage each scored a goal and assisted on another. Julia Haskins scooped two ground balls and assisted on a goal.

Jr Gold 7, South Hadley MA 0: Hayley Lambert, Kira Smith and Jenna Carvahlo combined for seven ground balls. Samson, McCabe, Kortze, Haskins and Carrino scored a combined 7 goals. Kortze also picked up three ground balls and Hage added an assist.

Lightning

Newtown Lightning 8, Litchfield U11 Team 6: On a very hot and sunny Sunday morning the fourth grade girls team played hard against a strong defense from Litchfield. The team’s 8 goals were divided among Kaitlyn King, Summer Pisacich, Rylee Harrell, Ashley Hammond and Colleen Phaneuf. Wonderful assists were provided by Catie Gregory, Alexa Gordon, Cameron Griffin, Katie Ryan, and Rylee Harrell. Cameron Griffin did very well playing goalie in the first half. Caroline Brown played goalie in the second half with two good saves. Colleen Phaneuf and Kaley Meisenheimer played such great defense that they caused Litchfield to turn the ball over twice. Great ground ball pickups were made by: Kaitlyn King, Jillian Carrino, Ella Marsh, Summer Pisacich, Megan LeBlanc, Katie Ryan, Rylee Harrell, Ashley Hammond, Colleen Phaneuf and Katherine Trammel. Olivia Steare, Maria Pagliaro, Anna LaBanca and Veronica Kroha all ran very hard at the offensive and defensive ends of the fields to help transition the ball and keep the game moving.

Boys

U11

Newtown 9 , Weston 1: Newtown U11 Boys Lightning Gold hosted Weston the evening of May 9. Both teams took the field with determination. Newtown was strong, as their offense tried to penetrate Weston’s defense and their defense battled back Weston’s offense. At half time, Newtown was up 2-1. Newtown’s Griffin Cross assisted Garrett Norberg for the first goal followed by Thomas Coppinger taking the second goal in from midfield. After half time, Newtown came out ready to rumble! Tucker Garrity scored the next 3 goals for Newtown along with an assist to Vincent Genovese. Goalie Kyle Burbank fought off multiple shots defending Newtown’s goal. Forrest Anderson came up with the ball from a pile of Weston defenders and took it in to score, followed by Andre Sokk assisting Norberg for another Newtown goal. Defenders Nick Cappelli, Alek Budd, Tanner Stergue and Gren Paynter battled off Weston to keep them from scoring. On offense, Brendan Hall, Declan Sughrue, Riley Mccafferty and Jack McDermott all helped to keep Newtown on top. Newtown dominated and had control throughout the hard fought game. An assist by Thomas Coppinger to Kyle Sullivan was the last goal scored for Newtown

 

U15

Relax Black 9, Newtown Senior Blue 4: The U15 Boys Blue team traveled to Easton on May 9 to try and add another win to their record. Unfortunately, the final score did not go their way, and excellent goal tending by Own Gray with 22 saves in goal prevented the gap from being larger. Shawn McCarthy had a strong game with three shots, 1 goal and five ground balls. David Anderson (assisted by Max Weber), Tommy Elliot and Mark Urso each added one of Newtown’s other three goals.

Newtown Senior Gold 8, Trumbull U15A 4: The U15 Newtown Senior Gold boys lacrosse team played Trumbull U15A Friday night at Treadwell, beating them 8-4. Newtown was down one goal after the first quarter with a score of 3-2, but goaltender Owen Gray kept Trumbull from scoring during the second while Newtown added two more goals, putting them ahead one goal by the half. With the game at 4-3 going into the third, Newtown took advantage of the home field and went on a 4-goal run, securing a comfortable lead going into the fourth. The offensive play was led by Jared Pearson with 4 goals and Payton Manning, Mark Urso, Andrew Svanda, and Colin Smalkais added 1 goal each. Charlie Fletcher was strong on defense picking up nine ground balls.

Newtown Senior Gold 12, Brookfield Senior Blue 5: On Saturday afternoon, at Tilson, Newtown Senior Gold added another victory to their record with a 12-5 win over Brookfield Senior Blue. It began with a goal by Jared Pearson early in the first and he went on to score 4 more before the game was over. Newtown came out strong leading at the half with a score of 7-3. The afternoon heat didn’t stop them, as they added 3 goals in the third quarter and another 2 in the forth. Colin Smalkais found the net twice while assisting another. Kris Whelan and Matt Meyers dominated at attack adding 1 goal and one assist each. James Carney, Nick Genovese, and Mark Urso each scored 1 goal, helping secure the win. Goaltenders Jeremy Salaris and Owen Gray shared the pipes and stopped eleven shots from entering.
