Newtown Scholarship Association Annual Golf Fundraiser

To Honor Dr Grossman In June

Newtown Scholarship Association is celebrating 75 years and will hold its 20th annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble on Monday, June 18, at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe. The cost is $180 per golfer, which includes lunch, golf, reception, prizes, raffles, and dinner at The Stone Barn Restaurant.

This year’s NSA scramble will be honoring Dr Robert Grossman, who has been a resident of Newtown since 1959.

Dr Grossman has had a lengthy career at Danbury Hospital as chief of surgery, president of the medical staff, and a member of the board of trustees. He helped set up the general surgical residency program at Danbury Hospital and was appointed assistant professor of surgery at New York Medical College.

Dr Grossman has also been active volunteering in community projects, such as chairman of the local Red Cross, a member of Newtown Rotary for more than 50 years, and also of the American Cancer Society.

Dr Grossman was also a past trustee of Newtown Savings Bank. He has always supported NSA and its mission of helping to advance the education of secondary school graduates residing in Newtown.

Held each June, the golf tournament event attracts a full field of recreational golfers and has raised $650,000 for NSA, thanks to the golfers and sponsors.

NSA was established as a nonprofit in 1937. In that year, a single $50 scholarship was awarded. Today, 70-plus students annually receive scholarships totaling more than $200,000. In its history, NSA has helped more than 1,000 students achieve a postsecondary education, and awarded more than $3 million in scholarships.

To participate in the golf tournament, contact Mark Fries at 203-426-8507 or maf@bbandb.com or Jim Morley at 203-426-8966.

Tee sponsorships are still available. Contact Mr Fries for information about those opportunities.
