Artwork by Lillian Rodriguez, a sophomore art and design major from Newtown, was included in the Freshman Foundationâs Yearend Show at Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y. Work by more than 108 young artists from the School of Art & Design was featured. She is the daughter of Heather and Corlos Rodriguez and is a graduate of Newtown High School.
The Eastern Connecticut State University Foundationâs competitive scholarship award recipients were recently announced. Among the approximately 300 ECSU students to receive competitive scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year were Kyle Droniak of Sandy Hook, a business administration major, awarded the ECSU Alumni Association Scholarship; and Marley Koschel of Sandy Hook, a psychology major, awarded the ECSU Foundation Scholarship.
Lauren Hanulik, a 2009 Newtown High School graduate, was inducted into Sacred Heart Universityâs chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing during an induction ceremony on Friday, April 13, at Testoâs Restaurant in Bridgeport. Lauren, who was also named on the universityâs Deanâs List, was one of 12 junior nursing students to be inducted.
Sandy Hook resident Victoria Mead was named to the 2011 fall semester Deanâs List at Simmons College, Boston. To qualify for Deanâs List status at the college, undergraduate students must obtain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, based on 12 or more credit hours of work in classes using the letter grade system.
On May 5, Keene State Collegeâs Commencement honored its largest graduating class to date, and Newtown residents Kevin Hoyt, Ryan Wilson, Kylie Bivrell-Walsh and Bethany-Laura Morin were among the graduates of the Keene, N.H., college.
The following local students recently became members of Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), the National Communication Associationâs official honor society at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.: Meghan Barbour of Newtown and Kelley Sullivan of Newtown.
Villanova University, Villanova, Penn., named the following area residents to its Deanâs List for the fall 2011 semester: Gregory Campbell, a Newtown resident enrolled in the College of Engineering; Mary George, a Newtown resident enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and Kyle Hufziger, a Sandy Hook resident enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. To qualify for the universityâs Deanâs List, a student must be a matriculated full-time student and earn a semester grade point average of at least 3.5.
 Emily Snyder of Newtown was named to the spring 2012 Champlain Collegeâs Deanâs List for academic achievements and achieving a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the Burlington, Vt., college. Emily is majoring in graphic design and digital media.
Western Connecticut State University recently released its graduate and doctoral degree recipients who were recognized during a commencement ceremony held at the start of May. Newtown residents named were Laura Amodeo, who earned Master of Business Administration; Brian M. Freitag, Master of Arts degree Earth & Planetary Science; and Jennifer Marie Lefevre, Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership. Sandy Hook residents named were Gregory Neil Perone, who earned a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Steven Raymond Schmidt, Master of Art in Earth & Planetary Science; Lisa A. Sheridan, Master of Science in Education; and Michael Robert Tibbetts, Master of Business Administration.
Marisa Kadar of Newtown was recently inducted into the Psi Chi honor society at Western New England University, Springfield, Mass. Marisa is a sophomore majoring in psychology at the university. Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in psychology, founded for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. To be eligible for membership, students must be enrolled as a major or minor in a psychology program. Students must also have completed nine semester hours of psychology courses with at least a grade point average of 3.0 in the courses.
