Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*This is an updated list of canceled classes: No Chair Yoga: May 22, June 15 and 22; No Zumba: June 15 and 22; No Exercise: May 23, June 15, 22, 25 and 27. Tai chi is canceled on May 22.

*A presentation on how to fight fraud will be conducted on Tuesday, May 22, at 1:30 pm. Bring your questions on recent changes to Medicare and your concerns on scams and rip-offs. Call to sign up.

*Looking for bakers to bake for our Mother’s Day tea on Wednesday, May 23; drop off donations no earlier than May 22.

*Mother’s Day bingo is on Wednesday, May 23, at 1 pm, and the tea will follow at 2:15 pm. Remember to wear a hat, especially if you decorated a hat last week.

*An inspirational concert featuring the band 4 Troops will salute our armed forces on Thursday, May 24, at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. A family-style luncheon will be served. Transportation is provided by the senior center (limited 16 seats). Cost is $60; departure time is 10:30 am.

Upcoming Programs

*On the third Monday of every month, there will be a bake sale from 9 to 10 am. We are looking for donations of baked goods to be brought in before that time.

*The senior center will be closed on Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day.

*A 40s Swing Dance Party at Villa Bianca will be Wednesday, June 13. An all-you-can-eat family-style luncheon, complimentary drink, live entertainment, music and dancing are all included for $29.95 per person. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Westchester Broadway Theater is presenting a luncheon and a matinee titled George M on Thursday, June 14. The play is based on the life of George M. Cohan. Depart on Thursday, June 14, at 9:45 am; cost is $90.

*“End Stage Dementia and Hospice” is the Lunch and Learn Series topic for Friday, June 15, at noon. Learn how to identify significant symptoms of end-stage dementia and how hospice care can help. Lunch is provided; call to reserve.

*Bingo will be Wednesday, June 20, at 1 pm.

*Day trips and overnight booklets are now completed. Stop by the Newtown Senior Center to get one.

Monday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class; 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30, line dancing; noon, lunch..

Wednesday: 10 am, bridge or pinochle; noon, lunch; 2:30 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10 am, board games or pinochle; 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble; 1 pm, yoga.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, quilting; noon, knit or crochet.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

May 21–25

Monday: New Orleans chicken over brown rice, broccoli, oat bread, pineapple juice, mandarin oranges.

Tuesday: Minestrone soup, tuna sandwich on seedless rye bread, carrot and raisin salad, brownie.

Wednesday: Sliced turkey with gravy, apple stuffing, peas and onions, wheat dinner roll, fresh fruit.

Thursday: Memorial Day Special: Cheeseburger on a roll, sautéed onions and peppers, potato salad, baked beans, pickle wedge, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, May 28: Closed in observance of Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 29: Herb baked chicken, cut sweet potato, bean blend, pumpernickel dinner roll, cranberry juice, applesauce.
