Barbara Ann (Caron) Borst, 87, of Sandy Hook, Conn., passed away at Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton, Conn., on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Joseph E. Borst, Sr, and is survived by their five children, Joseph Borst, Jr, and wife Kristi of Wells, Maine; Elizabeth Haugaard and husband Peer (deceased) of Mt Pleasant, S.C.; Michael Borst and wife Susan of Ansonia, Conn.; James Borst and wife Laurie of Danbury, Conn.; and Mary Marks and husband Fred of Morristown, N.J. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who she loved very much.

Barbara, a single child, was born to Lloyd and Hermine (Forrest) Caron on March 31, 1935, in West New York, N.J.

A resident of Newtown from 1955 until 2018, Barbara worked for the Newtown Board of Education for 32 years as an education assistant, first at Sandy Hook Elementary School and then at Hawley Elementary School, eventually retiring in 2002.

Serving the children of Newtown was one of Barbara’s main passions, where she freely gave much of her free time and talents as an active member of several community organizations. During the 1970s and 80s, Barbara was actively involved with the Newtown High School Band Parents Association, serving as Treasurer for many years. Barbara also served on the board for the Newtown Scholarship Association, receiving the Diamond Jubilee Award in 2014 for 25 years of service and commitment. Lastly, Barbara served as vice chair on the Board of Directors for the Newtown Children’s Adventure Center.

Barbara was also an active member of St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown.

A calling hour will be held on Tuesday, May 24, from noon until 1 pm, immediately followed by a funeral service at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Interment will be in St Rose Cemetery.
