Weller Foundation Announces 2020 NHS Award Recipients

In recognition of their exemplary achievements, six Newtown High School senior students recently received awards from The Weller Foundation, Incorporated.

The recipient of the $6,000 Weller Medical/Health Sciences Scholarship is Anna LaBanca, daughter of Frank and Karin LaBanca of Newtown. This scholarship was established in 1995 to encourage and financially assist a student to pursue a career in the healthcare field. Anna will be attending Quinnipiac University in the fall to pursue a career as a Physician’s Assistant.

The Recipient of the $500 Eleanor F. Moore Business Award is Nicholas Dauch, son of Fred and Christine Dauch of Newtown. This award was established in 1973 to honor an outstanding senior who has demonstrated the ability to achieve recognition in business. Nicholas will be attending The University of Connecticut to major in Sports Management and Business Administration.

The recipient of the $500 Paul W. Broggi Communications Award is Laura Augenbraun, daughter of David and Deborah Augenbraun. This award was established in 1986 to honor an outstanding senior who has demonstrated the ability to achieve recognition in communications. Laura will be attending the University of Connecticut to study Journalism and Mathematics.

The recipient of the $500 Senior Science Award is Julia Klein, the daughter of Elliott Klein and Janet Sehnee of Newtown. This award was established in 1962 to honor an outstanding senior who has demonstrated the ability to achieve recognition in science. Julia plans to study Neuroscience in the fall.

Two students were recipients of the $3,000 Vincent A. Voccia Vocational Award, Luke Azzarito, son of Mark Azzarito and Amy Dickinson of Sandy Hook, and Sean McKinley, son of Kerry and Brenda McKinley of Newtown. This award was established in 1983 by the Foundation to be presented to a senior to assist in preparation for a vocational or technical career. Luke will be attending Universal Technical Institute in Orlando, Fla. to study Automotive Technology and Sean will be attending The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Culinary and Food Sciences.

The Weller Foundation, Incorporated is a non-profit organization that was established in 1962 to provide financial assistance to educational, charitable, and civic organizations. It is well-known in the area for its numerous scholarship programs, student awards, and other supporting contributions.
