New Cable Series Begins This Weekend—

‘Today In…’ To Debut On Charter With A Familiar Backdrop

By Shannon Hicks

Charter Communications is celebrating its acquisition of a brand-new mobile video production truck by introducing a new series on the cable company’s CommunityVision 21 channel. Today In… will debut with a show filmed in — where else? — Newtown. It seems fitting to use the home town of the cable company for the first show of the series.

Wayne Winsley will serve as the host of each show, which rotate among each town of Charter’s 14-town region. Mr Winsley is the host and creator of the comedic and newsy The Wayne Winsley Program, which debuted on WSTC and WNLK before moving to WINE 940 AM and WPUT AM in April 1999. He is also a DJ for I-95 FM in Brookfield.

For each program, Mr Winsley will interview guests who offer a cross-section of the population of the town being featured. Co-producer Mark Ingram expects to produce a new program once or twice each month, with each program focusing on a different town. Mr Ingram, who is also serving as the director for Today In…, came up with the concept of the program.

A camera crew pulled on to the side lawn of C.H. Booth Library in Newtown on May 17 to film Today In… Newtown. Between set-up, the taping of the interviews and then the break-down, the crew was on-site for nearly four hours Thursday afternoon. Mr Ingram is hoping to keep the show as close to live-to-tape (running the show on just one take, but not live) as possible.

Mr Winsley conducted his interviews outdoors. After a short introduction he moved on to the interviews, spending between ten and 15 minutes with each of his guests. Programs will feature interviews and mentions of upcoming events in the area. It is a non-commercial production.

Today In… Newtown will include interviews with Addie Sandler, a counselor at Newtown Youth Services; Lions Club president Gordon Williams; and Newtown Bee arts editor Shannon Hicks. Col Martin Lifschultz (Ret.), a decorated World War II and Vietnam veteran, was also a special guest.

Today In… Newtown will air Saturday, May 26, at 11 am and 3 and 8 pm; Sunday, May 27 at 10 am and 2 and 7 pm; and Monday, May 28, at 11 am and 4 and 9 pm. The program will air on Charter Communications channel 21.

The supervisor for the Today In… series is Greg van Antwerp, the senior community access supervisor for Charter Communications. Chris Fatsy and Gina Gesiak, along with Mr Ingram, are the program’s co-producers.

The crew for Today In… is made up of interns participating in the free Charter-sponsored internship program which teaches people how to produce shows for television. The crew last week included Yvonne Reelick, Ken Arnott and Alex Hunt running the cameras and Daniel Leniart serving as the floor manager.

Charter provides cable access to 14 different towns, including Newtown. The provider serves over 59,000 subscribers through ten satellite dishes located in New Milford. CommunityVision 21, the community access channel, allows the members of the public to express their First Amendment right. The Federal Communication Commission has ordered cable providers to supply one channel for community use.

Town leaders and other organizations can request that Charter’s mobile video production truck visit an event in their town and provide taping facilities to be aired on CommunityVision 21. For information contact the cable company by calling 304-4050.
