On Sunday, May 17, Newtown Historical Society sponsored a lecture by historian, author, and lecturer Mark Albertson, on George Washington, at Newtown Meeting House. The session focused on the early career of Washington and how his leadership developed during the war. Albertson stressed that the “founding principle of the country was owning land. That’s what they were fighting for.” However, there was tension between Thomas Jefferson, a farmer, and Alexander Hamilton, an industrialist. He also noted that Washington was against having political parties because “they would breed factionalism and would divide the country.” The Constitution was written without mention of political parties. Washington also believed that “a president shouldn’t serve more than two terms, or we would end up with a dictatorship.”

The lecture by Albertson drew an enthusiastic audience that listened with rapt attention and asked many questions, which were answered with a high level of expertise and detail.
