More Than A One-Hit Wonder
By Eme Walker
Music is fast becoming the popular business to be involved with. Girl and boy groups are popping up across the nation and brand-new bands are being signed almost faster than the speed of sound.
Most of the new acts lack the talent it will take to stay in the industry. However, one band is proving that it is more than just a current trend.
Based in Los Angeles, Lifehouse has been rapidly moving up the music charts. On Halloween of 2000, Lifehouse released No Name Face, which had been in the works since 1998. Ten weeks after their release, the single âHanging By a Momentâ shot to the very top of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The band also got the opportunity to play âEverythingâ on the WB show, Roswell.
The love-struck lyrics and the smooth harmony of âHanging By a Momentâ sound great when blasted on the car stereo. Itâs no wonder this song is a number one hit.
While âHanging By a Momentâ is a number one song, itâs really hard to see any of the other songs topping any charts. The rest of the songs on the album are somewhat unclear. Despite thought-provoking and creative lyrics, the style of the music is a confusing mix of rock, ska and pop.
Take for instance âSick Cycle Carousel.â The first few seconds is played slowly in a lower key. Then the song suddenly speeds up and gets much edgier and louder. Then it slows down again back into a low key, but not the same low key as the introduction.
The song âSomebody Elseâs Songâ is strange in how the melody changes pitch frequently, going back and forth between low and high keys. The constant changing makes the tune hard to follow.
Overlooking the chaos of No Name Face, the band has become popular almost overnight, especially with teenagers and young adults. No matter what their sound and style is, Lifehouse is not and will not be just another one-hit wonder.
