Young Adult Programs
*Letâs Talk About⦠The River Between Us by Richard Peck on Wednesday, June 13, from 4 to 5 pm, in the Story Room.
During the early days of the Civil War, the Pruitt family takes in two mysterious young ladies who have fled New Orleans to come north to Illinois. This book is especially chosen to coordinate with Newtown Middle Schoolâs 8th grade study of the Civil War, but grades 5 and up are welcome to join us.
If enough people sign up in advance, we will move to a larger venue. Sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk, call the library, or just drop in.
*YA Summer Reading Volunteers: Young adults entering grades 7 and up who are interested in volunteering for our summer reading program (who have not volunteered in the past) must attend one of the training sessions on Monday, June 4, or Tuesday, June 5, from 4:30-5 pm, in the childrenâs story hour room.
For this program, young adults listen to younger readers report on the books they read over the summer, one on one. Volunteers are scheduled for all open library hours, including week nights until 7:30 and Saturdays. Application forms will be distributed at the meeting. If you are an experienced volunteer, you may pick up your registration form on or after June 4.
All applications must be returned to the childrenâs department by June 12.
The summer reading program will begin June 26 and ends on August 18.

Come learn how our community can prepare for the possibility of a 21st Century pandemic.
*Author Talk with Thomas Craughwell: On Monday, June 11, at 7:30 pm, Thomas Craughwell will share entertaining insights into the life in the Gilded Age: the rise of the counterfeiting in America, the establishment of the Secret Service to combat it, the prevalence of grave robberies, and the art of 19th Century embalming.
This program will be based on his strange but true book, Stealing Lincolnâs Body.
*Nonfiction Book Club: Join us on Tuesday, June 5, at 1 pm, for a talk about The Whiskey Rebellion: George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and the Frontier Rebels Who Challenged Americaâs Newfound Sovereignty by William Hogeland
Daytime Book Discussion: Monday, June 11 at 1 pm: Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates
*Independent Film: The next screening will be on Tuesday, June 5, at 7:30 pm.
Madeinusa, that eveningâs film, is about a 14-year old girl with a sweet Indian face who lives in an isolated village in the Cordillera Blanca Mountain range of Peru. This strange place is characterized by its religious fervor: From Good Friday to Easter Sunday, the whole village can do whatever it feels like. During the two holy days sin does not exist; god is dead and cannot see what is happening.
*The Book Nook: A great selection of brand new woodworking books have just arrived at the Book Nook in time for Fatherâs Day gift giving.
Some of them are hard to find classics that are currently out of print but cornerstones for the serious craftsmanâs library.
C.H. Booth Library, at 25 Main Street, can be reached by calling 426-4533.
