Car Show For Charity At Newtown High School

Newtown High School senior Lucy Manos wanted to host a car show for charity. Lucy and a few of her friends did not participate in clubs at the high school but wanted to make a contribution, so Lucy decided to organize a car show.

On Saturday, May 12, Lucy’s and her friends’ hard work came to fruition. Thirty-nine cars, from classics of the 50s and 60s to Supras, CRXs and pickup trucks of more recent vintage, were entered in the show. While the hard-rocking strains of George Thorogood and Alice Cooper filled the air, car buffs strolled around, viewing the cars, enjoying snacks, and soaking up the sun.

The show raised $1,200, which will be donated to a young man at the high school who has monthly medical bills of about $2,000 not covered by insurance.

Lucy praised her advisor for the event, guidance counselor Deidre Croce, for all her support.

“Miss Croce is the best counselor and advisor you could have,” she said. “Jimmy Young and the rest of the janitors were a huge help, and the school in general was great!”

Cars were judged in five categories. The winners in each are Classic: Bill Marchetti, 1956 Chevy Bel Air; Truck: Chris Poleti, Ford F-150; Domestic: Roy Scheunemann, 2004 Mustang Cobra; Import: Matt Allison, Toyota Supra; and Best-In-Show: Greg Fodor, Honda CRX.

“The show went great,” Lucy added, “and everyone had so much fun we hope to do another one.”
