Five-Year Old Donates Hair To Wigs For Kids

By Laurie Borst

Here in Newtown, girls of all ages have embraced Locks of Love and Wigs For Kids. Monthly, The Bee features photos of young ladies who have recently donated their hair to help people who have lost their hair because of disease or treatment for disease. Donated hair is made into wigs that are given to patients.

Five-year-old Ethan Hanna, a quiet young man with big blue eyes and a shy smile, chose to donate his hair to Wigs For Kids. Ethan had never had his hair cut, but when he heard about these programs, he decided it was time to cut it.

“They make hair into a wig that goes to a kid who has diseases,” he explained. “I thought I could help another kid.”

Ethan’s hair reached down to the bottom of his back, his mother, Leslie, explained. On May 3, Ethan donated 14 inches of hair that was cut by Jackie Davis at Robert Anthony’s Salon.

“She was the only one he would let cut his hair,” Mrs Hanna said.

And why was that?

“I thought she was a nice person,” Ethan replied.

Ethan did not seem to mind the cutting as much as watching it be prepared for shipping.

“He was sad when the hair was put in the bag to ship, sad to give up,” Mrs Hanna explained.

While he would definitely encourage others to donate their hair, he wants to keep his hair short now. The weather had warmed up around the time he cut his hair, and, his mom shared, she thought he liked it because it was cooler.
