Schools' Late Last Day Prompts Camp Rescheduling
Schoolsâ Late Last Day
Prompts Camp Rescheduling
Due to school days lost on May 17 and 18 following a severe storm May 16, the last day of school has been pushed back to June 25, which conflicts with the first day of summer camp activities. There are several factors that come into play when the Board of Education determines its schedule.
While the state of Connecticut requires a minimum of 180 days of school, the Newtown School Districtâs policy calls for 183 days minimum. Contracts reflect this and teachers must work 183 days. A variety of factors come into play that dictate the last day of school.
âThis has never happened before,â said Parks and Recreation Department Assistant Director of Recreations RoseAnn Reggianno. Camps scheduled to begin June 25, now tentatively rescheduled for a new start date of Tuesday, June 26, include Lady Nighthawks Basketball Camp, Nighthawks Baseball Camp, Field Hockey Camp, Slamma Jamma Basketball Camp, Karate Camp, Summer Horse Camp, Mini Hawks, Tennis Lessons, Newtown Softball Camp, Horseback Riding Camp, Robotics.
Ms Reggianno explained that some camps will make up the lost time throughout the course of the camp, while other camps hours will be extended to adjust for the lost day. Contact Ms Reggianno at 270-4340.
